I have a '69 BB coupe w/sidepipes. The engine is not original to the car but is a '69 block from a 427/400 car. I don't know which BB the car came with, but if the odometer is any indication, it was a 390 or 400 hp car. I am running 3x2 carbs and have a recent rebuild with hydraulic rockers/cam. The CR is down to help me run pump gas, but the cam is aggresive enough that I am putting out healthy power (no dyno #s yet).
The guy I bought the car from had a 427/435 sticker on the correct triangular air cleaner cover. I just took delivery of a new cover, and, for now, I will install it blank. What sticker should I use? I think I am putting out over 400 hp, but since it is not a solid lifter car, I don't think I should fly the 435 banner.

Run what you feel like running. Heck, I have a '69 Camaro with Z/28 emblems that are far from being correct. But the car looks great and I enjoy it and that's what counts to me. If your car is not correct to begin with who cares?
Sounds like your in the "Grey" zone to me, should I stay stockish to please the purist and it still a cool car or go to the dark side, customize.
Stay away from the hot rod mags, it's like candy man....
