Did I see that car on ebay? Engine compartment looks clean but with only 50k miles I'm curious about the need for new seats and paint. Outstanding color, good luck with it.
ESU
Yes, it was on ebay, high bid 10,899. I just got in NC. Will
go pick it up in the morning.
Very nice car! Hopefully when you see it it's as good in person as it is in the pictures . I've always been a bumper car person, but I have found the later C3's growing on me.
OK, 50k original miles, yes, maybe, who knows. The title said milage exempt. Good looking new paint with bad prep = blisters. One poped like a pimple with oily liquid coming out. Bumpers were painted off the car, but did not line up when remounted. Paint on bumper cracked when pressed with finger. New interior because car sat outside and was faded & worn. Wrong carpet was installed with spray adhesive. Lots of surface rust inside of car: seat tracks, dash, computer box, ect. Rust at the windshield post & firewall. Maybe tops were leeking for a while. Tach, door locks, dash lights didn't work. The engine was detailed with Krylon. Removal of the air filter housing showed melted vacume lines, fried wires and what looked like fire extinguisher powder. Some type of rodent nest in between the rad & AC cond. Car started easily but ran rough with rich exhaust smoke. I did not drive it. The frame looked good with fresh black undercoat. Parts that wasn't undercoated had normal surface rust. I was disappointed to say the least. I would have had to spend around 8 to 10K to make it right. I don't think the paint would have lasted long before it started popping & peeling. Dealer said all he did was carpet & seats. Everything else was done when he bought it at auction in Feb. He was a good sport about it, said if I didn't want it, I didn't have to buy it. Second place bidder had cash in hand and was ready to come get it. I said let him have it. My search for the right, 82 Bright Blue Metalic with Dark Blue leather continues.

Great write-up, thanks for giving us the feedback. IMHO you were right to walk away from it because of the paint job alone. From what you described you'd have to have her stripped and painted again - $5K easy!
As you hunt continues I offer the following; my title now says "mileage exempt" as well, that is why the backup documents I've collected are so important. My state, Alabama, puts mileage exempt on any car older than a certain year - 20 I think. The car had a FL title when I bought her that stated mileage, I kept a copy of that. I also have copies of titles all the way back to the original owner showing transfer from owner to owner. This is supported by a CarFax and finally, all of this is supported by the State of OH's smog test and transfer of owner, ect from their DMV website. My point is that you may find a car with a title stating mileage exempt but if the owner can back up the reading with a significant amount of unrelated documentation then you should be good to go. Trust your heart/gut as you did on this one.
The right car is out there somewhere for you. I wanted an 82 in the worst way but it took a year to find mine. I was looking for a red ext. car that would need interior work and paint so I could do it to my standards, but NO rust, not even surface. Being from Oh. and not wanting to travel real far was quite a challenge. But time paid off and I found my car. One thing about vettes, there's alot out there to choose from. Good luck hunting !
I have a friend with an '82 that he would be willing to sell to a member of the forum. It only has 39k original miles. The color is 2 tone white/silver with silver interior.
