That's the least thing that worries me.

Buying an old car is one thing, but buying an old car that has been abused for 30 years is another.
try buying a car that was beaten to death (thrown rod) brought back to life (new motor) and then after 500 miles let sit for 12+ years... without knowing it until you started working on it!!

Hope you have better luck than the fool i was referring to!!! (me)

Can you post some pics here.. for inspirational purposes ?
I hear you.. Looks like the prev owner of my car was drunk all the time when he worked on the car.
Every screws and bolts have been replaced with oversized ones. Now the right sized ones are not fitting.
He broke everything that he took out.
Surprisingly the paint and the underbody was good. It passed my visual inspection before buying.

some of that gunk is holding the old motor together. I once cleaned up a set of gunked up heads on my wife's first car when we were dating. Car never used oil or smoked until you guessed it I clean up the heads. I would run very lite weight detergent motor oil like 5/30 in it for 100 to 200 miles drain & refill w/clean detergent oil for 200 to 500 then replace w/ 10w40. I knew a guy who filled the engine w/trany oil ran the car 50 miles and it cleaned up all the gunk.

Ditto. I had a 1964 Dodge Polara 383 (that's a real 383, not some smallblock stroker) and it had sludge so thick in the heads it looked like Bosco syrup on a Winter day. If you have that much crud on it, the engine probably needs a rebuild anyway. Take the whole dang thing apart...or leave it, like Ironcross said. Don't do it 1/2-***

I guess I will just clean out the flaky stuff and put the cover back on.

BTW.. are there any engine rebuild kits available?
I would like to do it myself.

Started the motor in my 72 project when I got it home. The receipts that I got said the motor had been rebuilt. (the girl that I bought the car from was from a family of mud-bog racers, chevy engines in Jeeps) I had no reason to believe the motor had NOT been rebuilt. I was going to leave it alone. I decided to pull the heads, top end gaskets are not that expensive. When I got the heads off, I found the heads had been glass beaded and had not been cleaned adequately (beads in the water jacket) The cylinder bores had been honed, still had crosshatching!! Pistons are new, valve job is new, they didn't touch the crank!!! scored and gouged and the new bearings were already showing copper.....When I pulled the pistons/rods out, I found 3 broken rings.....am I glad I pulled the motor!!
