Hi everyone!!! I am in the process of stripping my '75 vert for a repaint later this summer. My problem is that the previous owner put the fender emblems on using an adhesive. He still used the studs for alingment but then used adhesive instead of speed nuts. What can I use and/or do to get them off w/o damaging the body?
Sometimes it might be as easy as using a hairdryer and warm the adhesive up good and it might come loose with a little "gentle" persuasion. Took off many Dealer emblems that way. 3M also has a adhesive remover if you can get a little back behind the emblem.
tsm75 -- I just went through this with my 73vert. I got it back from paint this weekend and if the emblems you reference are the "Stingray" emblems they do not have speed nuts. The posts are used to properly align the emblem and the adhesive is used to attach.
I tried to used some 3M tape to reapply the adhesive to the back of my old "Stingray" emblems and I did not like the way it turned out. It was sloppy and there is no way I was going to put something like that back on the car. SO, I bit the bullet and bought new ones that already had the adhesive applied nice and neat.
To remove use a plastic bondo puddy paddle. On new paint usally the pins will hold the emblems on if you don't clean the mounting holes out too much to make a press fit
The easiest way I have found yet and will not damage the car at all is about 25# fishing line. Roll the fishing line around a couple small pieces of wood or some twigs, leave about 6 inches between the wood, place it beside emblem, draw tight and then start sawing under the emblem. Do it as if you were using dental floss. You can clean left over glue using gogone, bug & tar remover, diesel fluid or WD-40.

This method works great. Use the Googone to soak the emblem before using the fishing line.
I was able to pry mine off with a putty knife. There was no damage to the fiberglass. I went slow and paid close attention to make sure nothing happened.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I'll give them a try. I bought my
'75 in Nov. of 2005 from the original owner. Like most '75s that old the two bumpers needed replacing. I put a '75 front and a '80s rear. Once the project is completed I'll try posting some pics of the process.
This is a great forum.....lots of great people and TONS of very useful info. Thanks to all!!!!
