I was given this by the previous owner of the car, after 5 years I still have no idea what it is.

Is that a wing nut on the back side there? How about a pic of the back of that thing?

Thats a late C3 distributor cover the wing nut is for the ground wire. BTW it is fugly.

Yes it's the distributor and sparkplug wireloom cover. I believe mine has a metallic liner (aluminum foil) on the inside. It fits between the firewall and the back of the engine.

78-82 distributor cover. Supposed to eliminate radio interference. Wing nut is for a ground strap. There is a ring which mounts to the top of the HEI over the plug wires. This thing then staps onto the ring. Diagram in the AIM.
