Unnecessary chrome to be painted black. Like the windshield chrome, door handles, and rocker moldings. Also some big wheels and nice brake rotors and calipers.
"Chrome is like cleavage - too much is not enough."
You nailed it man!! I think the '58s had just enough. Now Chroming is a toxic waste generator so not much likely to ever be done in manf. again.
Seriously, chris if that's the look you want go for it but IMO you'd be taking a '70s car (in your case) and styling to '80s period correct. I like lots of different kind of rides but the most well done seem to be either "factory correct" or "period correct". I can even appreciate current styling trends such as resto-rods. BUT WHY O WHY would you take a car and use out of date styling to mod it? would you shop at a resale shop and wear clothes that are out of style but still not cool enough to be vintage?
Everyone has their likes and dislikes. Some love the original touch and others like to give their Corvettes a personal touch. Both views great. Occausionally on this forum some seem to imply their way is the way it should be. My view is they are your Covettes and there is only one person you have to make happy and that is yourself. You are the one who will spend many hours in the garage just sitting their having a beer and looking at you ride day dreaming.
I personally love upgrading my Corvette to make it run better and and ride safer and have done a little dechroming on the outside and I'm very pleased with the look. At the same time I would love to have a correct original 1970 sitting next to in the garage. They are both pieces of automotive art.
WOW I Love the Black Luggage Rack, and Mirrors.

Besides - it is his to do with as he pleases.
My plans are pretty minor, looks wise. Mainly fiberglassing the front bumper and rear pan, shaving the door handles and antenna, Cobra style gas cap, adding side pipes and doing something cool with the hood, like a Stinger-type scoop...oh, and modern tires/wheels!

Keep the chrome bumpers
And maybe add the chrome gills
Basically this nails it
im with ya! i would chrome the gills or put an emblem to add something to the side/flanks of the car, but other than that i love it. i asked my 14 yr. old daughter what she thought of the picture in the quote and she said, " it like needs some chrome sidepipes or something ".
We ALL had more hair back then! (I'm 51 - you do the math) OK - I actually enjoy every minute if every day. I guess I was thinking of Watergate, Vietnam, Disco, ugly cars with 5mph bumpers (C3's excluded of course), and Jimmy Carter instead of... instead of... the parties...platform shoes...instead of...uh...oh yeah, the ladies... uh... Aw Heck! I lost my train of thought! (this memory lapse is proof that I was indeed there!)
I hear ya man, people tell me i had a good time back then as well

I don't know if any of you guys have ever seen black chrome...and I don't know if it can be done for side pipes....but if so that might looks sharp on this car.
Black chrome is way cool!

I love black chrome, I would love to have my wheels done in it, but...$$$$$$$.
in my personal opinion, the late 60s vettes are perfect! just the right amount of chrome, the style of the body. add hooker sidepipes to it and I'd have to say they're the sexiest car ever!
I do not understand. Why buy an expensive older/ classic car, and then try to make it look "newer" / "more modern"??? I do not understand this concept. If you wanted a car that looked more modern, why not just buy a C-4 or some other , newer , more modern car?

Let the classics look like classics!!!
I look at it in most cases as "classic with a modern touch". With mine, I want a smooth, purposefull, look. Trim is unneccesery, and therefore goes against my overall plan.
Here's the thing. We cannot all have the numbers matching cars. I, for one, bought a NOM car for the very basic reason that I want to drive and enjoy it. However, I keep to a stock appearance. That said, if you have a car that is not purely original to start with, I say why not work with it in a way that makes you happy? Honestly, I think the car that started the thread misses the mark on a few details, but no one decision is all that bad. The gills are classic and cannot be caused to fade to black as they are. The side emblem needs to stand out. Wheels? In the world of 22s on mini-vans, I can deal with personal choice, and we all know chrome bumper cars can be made to stop better (even if the real point was to have big painted calipers showing through the wheels).
Don't be discouraged, but the car needs some more inspiration before people will react the way you want
