I'm going to be designing a Corvette website for myself, and was wondering what the majority of you web designers use to work on your sites. I'm looking for a professional grade program, preferably free, that you don't need a degree in web design to use.
I don't know if this will help but you can go to the page below and open a free Netscape web page and is fairly easy to do. I don't know exactly what you were looking for but it allows you to do alot .

I actually have my own domain, I just need to look into software. My girlfriend is great at web design, and will help me a lot, but she's a Mac user and knows very little about PC programs, which I will use, and Java, which I want to incorporate.
Matt,
if you have your own domain name, you need to set up an account with a web host,to host your site on.Then you have to learn some basic html.
Dreamweaver is a very good software program, makes it very easy to set up your web pages.

Yep, I have the account too, through GoDaddy. They have some basic web editing software I can use, but it seemed a little low grade to me.
Is that Dreamweaver a free ware or is it spensive?
I build websites and custom web coding for a living. The right software/tools for the job differ with each job sometimes. I think, as mentioned, Dreamweaver is a good program to start with but you really can use just about anything already mentioned. A lot of layout is done in Photoshop or Illustrator depending on what the person is comfortable with. Most people I work with use Photoshop for mock-ups. It just depends on how "custom" you want your site.
There's really no difference in the software for PC and Mac. I use both and the tools for one are about the same on the other. I like Mac's better but can't use Visual Studio on it without running a Virtual Machine so I use PCs for that stuff.
Learn HTML.......all the code on every website is available by clicking on "View Source" in your browser....if you like a certain aspect of a website you can copy the code and incorporate it into your own for free......but only if you understand the code...
You'll still need to know HTML even if you have a WYSIWYG editor, because those programs aren't perfect and can drive you nuts trying to align a table or photo....knowing HTML will help you get the program to do what you want....and yes, you can use Notepad as an HTML editor....
You'll also want a good photo editor to downsize your photos to reduce bandwidth, and possibly an FTP program to get your files quickly to your host....maybe also a video editor.....

Hmm..okay, well it looks like I'm half way there. I have Adobe software, a fast machine to use it on, a friend who can write and understand code, and plenty of image editing software for image work. I need a good editor, and a book on HTML.

Only to a point, you won't be able to see the CGI code written in perl or PHP etc, I have more of that than I care to admint ;-)
but there are examples of that stuff all over too.
We sites are like software ( thats my day job), it's never ending... upgrade, upgrade, upgrade
For HTML, I'd actually recommend the Dummies book, they discuss pure HTML not any one implementation of it or how to use it with a specific editor.
One other thing you'll want is an FTP program to upload your files to the website. I'd recommend FileZillia, it's free fast and wonderfull.

Thanks Keith. I actually plan on the Dummies books as they tend to get to the root of what's being discussed and I find that to be very easy and straight forward.
I have a few options for the FTP program, as Sarah does lots of web design, she says hers will work for me as well.
