Default driving ?

i have a 1976 l48 automatic transmission and i was wondering what to drive in. it has a 3 a 2 and a 1 on the shift column. can anyone explain which one to drive in and why. im sure each one is for different situations so any help would be great.

1, 2 and 3 refer to 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Just like any other automatic if you put it in 3rd the transmission will shift through the three forward gears as needed (or at least as the trnasmission thinks is needed). If you put it in either 1st or 2nd the transmission will only use the lower 1 or 2 gears. (not good for gas mileage).

1 puts the tranny in first and it stays there. 2 will let it shift to 2nd gear. 3 Will let it shift normally thru all 3 gears, so drive around in 3

Read the owner's manual. If you don't have one, order a reproduction.

Wish it did - boy howdy could I have some fun then

This is prob a younger member and all autos (since I can remember) have had a "D" for drive or "OD" for over drive on the shift column. When you get hold of some older cars with only 1, 2 or 3, I could see how this may cause some confusion. Tell ya what though - he would find out really quick if he started out on 1 and tried to drive down the street - his next post would be something like "blew the motor up today".
