St. Jude Donor '06-'07-'08-'09-'10-'11-'12-'13-'14-'15-'16
If one of you want to take the lead and set up a Paypal account I would be willing to donate a few bucks. I'll bet a lot of others would do this too. Then ask the moderators to make this a sitcky. Anything left over could go to St Jude's Children's Hospital.
Also let me check with Jason at Vette2Vette. He mostly deals in C4/5s but he might have something laying around. His prices are great and he is a good guy. Might be pricey to ship from southern IL though.
Since we are dealing with very limited funss that he has to get this project done and the frame is going to take up the vast majority of that we very well may have to start some type of donation fund.
We want to take things apart first though and see just what is is that we will need for a parts lists based on what is definirely going to need replacement and what can still be reused, etc.
Once we have that done we will have a better idea of how much more we will need to raise to complete this.

This is a great idea. I would absolutely make a donation via paypal. I helped my son locate his first car ('70 mustang) , but it's easy to see how a kid could get taken this way. You guys are doing a great thing, but I'm just too far away to help in any other manner.
BTW: Shame on the seller that did this - bad karma will get him in the end
Barry, Andy & All - I just sent an email to Corsa Performance Exhaust asking for some help.
I know Ron at Contemporary Corvette - I'll see if he can help out after we know what we need.
Any additional thoughts on this?
John
Why stop there? Send an email (non spam) to all the Corvette suppliers and see what they can donate. No better time to fix a 27 yo car than when the body is off the frame. /:\
John, Thank you very much, that is very generous of you! BTW, Linda says hi.
Chevy69, I was talking to my club president about a donation fund today and it looks like we probably will set one up. I'll post in this thread when it's ready. Thank you very much for being willing to help this good cause.
Parkerracing, I do plan on contacting a lot of the parts vendors and explaining the circumstances and hopefully they will support us in this project with donations of parts or at least a significant discount. We want to wait to be able to get a complete list of needed parts before we contact them though.
I'm Batman, yes, that thread you referenced is the car car and issue. Someone else in my club must of posted that but to be honest i'm not sure who it is since their profile doesn't list their name and I can't think who in the club has a blue C5 with a raised cowl hood like that although we do have a large number of members that don't have much available time to participate in a lot of the club activities so oviously I don't know every single Vette in our club. Regardless, I know that theyt did contact the seller after finding out about the bad frame but nothing came of it. As for any legal action that would be between the young man's parents and the seller and out of my realm of responsibility. My only concern is trying to help this younf man get his car in running condition and get the frame swapped out for him.
Barry, I just happen to find this on another thread... $450 for a rusty 1980 frame... It's located in Grand Mound, if any of you know where its at... If its a a solid frame, might be something to look into... Hope this helps... http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/pts/342885023.html

Barry, I was just saying that it sounds like a situation where a lawyer might be helpful. The family might want to consider it.

The guy knowingly sold him a car that he knew had serious issues without even mentioning it to him.... I would think a court would burn him up especially for selling/scaming a teenager who worked his butt off to have a good reward only to get screwed by some jerk...
yep, we do plan on photo documenting the whole frame swap and submitting the story into one of the magazines - I'm also going to try to usr that as an incentive for the parts vendors to try to get parts donations and/or at least some (significant??!!) discounts on the other parts we will need.
As for the legal issues involved between the family and the seller that's not my concern as I've mentioned but I don't disagree with you. The car was purchased about 5 months ago so not sure how that will affect things or not and I'm sure the family is aware of legal action as one course of resolution but that's for them to decide or not - again, I'm not getting involved in that aspect of it. We are simply trying to help the young man get the car on the road and help him with the frame swap and also help him see the "better" and more positive side of the Corvette hobby.

Barry - in case I miss it please PM me when you have the account set up
well, good news finally, I managed to find a frame and at a VERY reasonable price!
Kevin (VettesByDesign) had referred me to a contact when I first started this thread but I waited to call that gentleman until we had the car actually here. I spoke to him yesterday and he has three 80-82 frames. He remembered Kevin telling him about our situation and offered a frame at a VERY reasonable price to help us out, only $650. I think that is a very fair price, and even better yet, he is only a few hours driving distance away. He is in North Central PA about 45 minutes north of Williamsport so we don't have to worry about the cost of shipping via freight and that prohibitive cost.
We are going to get one of our club members who volunteeered to go pick up the frame and we will get it down here soon and than we can really get this project started.
Kevin, thank you very much for the contact info and also for already speaking to Gale and explaining the reasons behind our needing this frame. If you talk to Gale again please let him know how much we VERY MUCH appreciate his help. Hopefully we will be able to make arrangements to get the frame picked up in the next week or two - it depends on the work schedule of our club member who volunteered to go get it.
Once we get the car taken apart than we will see what other required parts we are going to need and than we will contact the parts vendors and see if any of them will be willing to help us out also.
If the $650 frames don't work for some reason, I'd be glad to donate a 78 frame. I'm about 45 miles north of Williamsport, PA as well. You could use the saved $650 to sandblast the frame and change out the rear end mount for bat wing mounts.
John, Yes, planning on TRYING to be at the show at KOP on Sunday (depending on weather of course). Looks like the '65 probably won't be there as I've been fighting with her for two days now and still can't figure the problem out but she ain't running so I'll probably have to come in the '78. I look forward to seeing you there but Linda has to work that day so won't be able to make it.
Kipp, that is very generous! I'm not sure exactly what the mods are required to convert the '78 to an '80-'82 frame but than we'd need to find someone that knows just what to do and do it for us. I'll mention it to our club though and see what they think. Even the expense to do that should be minimal I'd imagine. How badly does the frame need sandblasting and what's the overall condition?
The frame is in pretty good shape, no rust throughs, doesn't ever look to have been hit. I got a 79 frame and swapped to batwing rear, that way I could just move all my new parts over. I'm not sure what the exact differences are, but I thought all c3's used the same basic frame, just minor changes year to year.
I paid $400 to have my 79' frame sandblasted, by a local sandblast company. They did a great job, frame looked like new when they were done.
Who is going to do the swap? Don't they know what needs to be done? I believe that VanSteel has a pictorial on their website on how to do the batwing modification.
