I paid $400 to have my 79' frame sandblasted, by a local sandblast company. They did a great job, frame looked like new when they were done.
Who is going to do the swap? Don't they know what needs to be done? I believe that VanSteel has a pictorial on their website on how to do the batwing modification.
volunteers from our Vette Club are doing the frame swap but I don't know the specific differences between the pre-'80 frames and the '80-'82 frames, only that there were some differences that do need to be changed to make it work.I'm also not sure of what anyone that is working on this project has the proper welding skills so we would need to find someone that knows the specific changes and can do the welding and how much it would cost.
i'll also have to check with a local sandblasting place to see what they charge to do a frame.

It still may be possible that if we can both of these done at a reasonable price that it would still be worth it and less expense.

ok all, I am recieving the money from the young man tonight so that we can go get this frame I found. hopefully we will have it picked up and here within a week - depends on the work schedule of our club member who is volunteering to go get the frame.

I ran into a forum member (Vetteman1978) over the weekend at a show in Pa and he already contributed a very generous donation to the project. THANK YOU VERY MUCH John!!.
Using that money I opened a new bank account and just set up a new PayPal account in case there are others that wished to donate and contribute to this worthwhile cause. I know that between here in the C3 General section, two other forums that I visit that almost a dozen people expressed an interest in donating to this cause which is why I decided to set up the PayPal account.

I've never revieved money via PayPal before so not sure what info I'm suppose to give so people know how to donate to the donation fund though. for the PayPal account do I just give the email that's associated with it, or the name that the PayPal account is set up under?

Be well,

either one would be a great help, and to tell the truth, most especially lending a hand if you aren't too far away. The car is currently at one of our club member's home in Kennett Square, PA. Depending on where you are in Maryland it may be an hour or so for you - it's approx an hour or hour and 15 minutes from Baltimore.

We plan on getting started as soon as possible. Obviously the very first thing we need to do is build a body dolly and than we can start the disassembly to lift the body off the frame.
I know that with my work schedule I basically only have Sunday's (when there is not a Vette show I'm committed to be at) and Tuesdays to work on the car. Other club members may be able to work on it other days....

With various people, all their various work schedules, plus we are now in the middle of "show season", getting any single day that everyone is available on the same day is difficult at best so we will have to make do the best we can

Barry, you use the PayPal email address. Once we have that, it is easy to get money to you.

This coming weekend, I'm booked pretty solid. Our club's annual picnic is on Saturday, and I'll be spending Father's Day with my daughter (could possibly help in the morning/early afternoon, but don't know for sure yet).

The following weekend (23/24), I might be able to help on Saturday, or on Sunday until mid-afternoon (have to be at a club Board meeting at 5PM).

Has it been determined that the original frame is unrepairable?

Be well,

SJW

cool. thanks John!! I'll get that info out in another post after this one.

SJW, yep, this weekend is booked for most of use here also. Next Sunday may be a possibility though.

Yes, the frame is non-repairable.

for those that expressed an interest in donating to this project to help out this young man the PayPal account address is

corvettefun@comcast.net

The single biggest expense is already covered, and that's the cost of the replacement frame and hopefully we should have that here in another week or so. Additionally I'm about 90% sure that the sandblasting of the frame is also already taken care of since a good friend of mine said we should be able to get that done at his workplace and if things come together on that the sandblasting won't cost us anything.
As you are all aware, once we lift that body off we are SURE to come across unexpected parts that are going to need to be replaced and it's this unknown that is going to be the difficult part on the very limited budget we currently have to work with.

Any donations will go in full towards this project in helping this young man get his car back on the road.
We WILL be contacting some parts vendors to see what donations or at least significant discounts they can offer us. If any of them come thru it should help relieve a big part of the burden on the budget.
Any cash donations that are recieved that are left over at the end of the project (if any) will be forwarded to charity.
So that it's clear up front, NO monies whatsoever will be obsorbed or kept by our club. The goal here is to help this young man get his car on the road and introduce him to a more positive side of the corvette hobby rather than the negative one shown to him by the seller of this car. Therefore 100% all monies recieved go towards the project but IF there is any remaining monies at the end than they will go to charity as we feel that is the only fair thing to do.

This is one outstanding club to take on this task and you should receive a award for club of the year! I will be sending a donation in a couple days to help out.

P.S. post some pics when you are able to do so.

Phil

Thank you! it will be greatly appreciated.

don't worry, as soon as we start turning wrenches on this we will start having pictures. I'll also add a section in the "Pictures" section of our club's website, of which I'm the webmaster, for this project and I'll post the link to it as soon as we get some pictures taken and put up.

I went thru a very similar situation with my first car. I'm up in the Scranton/Binghampton area. If you guys need welding done I will be happy to come down, with welders (both 220 and 110 portable units), and do what you need. I also have a roll back trailer if transportation of the frame falls thru. I'll be home after the 18th.

My cell is 570-862-3737 if you need to get a hold of me.

Ross

Ross, we appreciate the offer! Tight now with the replacement frame we shouldn't need any welding but who knows what we may find when we get the body lifted so will definitely keep you in mind just in case.

Jerry, thank you VERY much for the donation. I know I keep saying the same words now but believe me, it's GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!
Same thanks to Ron and Scott also for their donations!

To me THIS is what being part of a common interest community such as this Corvette hobby of ours, is suppose to be about - helping others when we can.
I can only imagine already how big of a smile Mike is going to have on his face when we complete this and he finally gets to actually drive this car that he's only been able to dream about and look at until now.

Part of the deal should be the kid (parents) pursuing legal action.

I can go get the frame Friday 6/15 if you'd want and if it would fit in a full size pick up. If you don't have me get the frame I'll donate what the gas would have cost me. Post or email a schedule of when the project will be worked on and I'll try to make it out. Also I have a lift in my garage if that would make things easier, only thing is I wouldn't want the lift tied up too long

Rex

you probably don't remember me but I was at your house once. I joined you on a "forum event" lunch cruise. I came by in my '65 coupe. This was probably 2 years ago.
Loved that garage you built when I saw it!

cool, when it's time for the magazine story i'll get hold of Chris. I already have contact info and have spoken to the editor of Corvette Enthusiast magazine on something else last year plus I'm on very good terms with the tech writer for that same magazine (John Hinckley) so I was hoping that either one of those two might be able to help me get the story in but having another contact at one of the magazines is always helpful!

I really appreciate the offer to go get the frame but that's already been arranged - one of our club members already volunteered to do get it. He had a Chevy Tahoe and trailer so it's no trouble for him. Plus he used to live up in the area the frame is so he knows the area well (and i'm guessing he may take the opportunity to stop in and see people he still knows up there).

Your offer to come and help out working on the car would be VERY helpful though. Not sure of what kind of "formal" work schedule we will have on this project but as soon as we know something I'll try to contact you and let you know some dates. If you can make it, great, if not we will understand. Unfortunately, with those of us that have volunteered to work on the car it's a matter of when each of us is available around work schedules, and other commitments. This very well may work out that we may show up to work on the car individually a lot of times just because we are free that day or that afternoon, or whatever, and only have set "group" work days occaisonially when we can work it out..... not sure how this is going to pan out yet.

Belive me, having use of that lift would be extremely handy but as you can imagine I think this project may stretch out over the entire summer because of our schedules and when we can work on it. I'd be afraid of getting the car there (another flatbed expense for him against a very tight budget) and than so we wouldn't tie up your lift it would create yet another expense to flatbed it back here again, etc.
I wish we actually could take advantage of that lift but i think logistically it won't work.
Perhaps towards the end of the project when most things are together again and the car is drivable we could get it over to your place one afternoon and get it up on the lift though to "double check" everything before we declare the car "done" and turn it back over to him? That might turn out to be very useful possibly.

I remember you, I think you left your car in the driveway and cruised with Charlie?

Anyway, glad to help let me know when. Using the lift for a final, no problem.
