Hey guys, has anyone ever used either of these hand held sand blasters before? What were the results? I just want something to blast my alternator and power steering pump and other small bits etc before I powder coat them. I only have a small compressor and buying a cabinet blaster is not an option.
I'd appreciate any feedback
Specs:
Hopper size: 9 ounces
Maximum air pressure: 90 PSI
Air consumption: 1.7 CFM
Air inlet: 1/4'' NPT
Nozzle diameter: 5 mm
Tool weight: 12 oz.
I bought one but haven't used it yet. The unit I have is from Ultra Pro and has a dual feed system. Top container and also syphon hose attachement for drawing media from the bag.
You may wish to consider the dual feed as the reservoir is very small.

Thanks, I didn't realise there was dual feed models available. What's the web site you bought it from?

Is that the sand tank on top of the gun? I used one of the sand blasters with the portable hand held tank and I emptied that thing out pretty quick. I'd think with that little storage you'd spend more time refilling the sand than blasting the parts.

However that said I have one of the purple hopper ones and it works very well for the intended purpose. Goes thru a lot of sand, but it does a nice job for small parts. Heck I even used it to strip a C3 flexible rear bumper of paint. Now that took a LOT of refilling. But for $15 on sale, you can't go too far wrong.
I have a small siphon type blaster, which hold about a gallon of media.
Trouble with siphon types is that they clog up easily .. need to shake the hopper.
The gravity feed types you show work better - with more filling.
I have a small gravity feed gun that I got or $35.oo. It works very well for small jobs, but you must be sure to screen the media first, or it will clog very easily. I use window screen tied over a 5 gallon pail to sift the media through.
I just finished sandblasting a frame with a siphon feed blaster that I bought for either $12.99 or $13.99 at Home Depot. I used a couple of bags of Play Sand for the media (yes I am BUBBA). It isn't the greatest solution for blasting but it did the job and cost less than $20.00 to clean the whole frame. I did have to vacuum up and re-sift the sand numerous times and my driveway looks like I live on the beach but I got the results that I needed.

It,s not Bubba, it's being thrifty. I got in trouble by my kids for pilfering blasting media out of their sand box. The solution was to get them to sift it through the screen for me. They were so happy that they got to help out, and I was amused that I didn't have to do the sifting.
I have a Craftsman blaster. The tank holds a bag of sand. It works great for motorcycle frames, lawn furnature and such. I think it was around $45.
I have the same thing. works great! I'm glad its not any smaller, cause i've found alot of things to blast...so has my brother, my son, my friends, even my mom
Thanks for the input guys. I only have a smallish compressor so I went with the first one. Refilling it often was the lesser evil for me than buying another compressor.

Hmmm.... I don't have a 4WD, but at least my blasting media will be FREE
Years and years ago I used to work for Safety Kleen. I ran a route for their Body Shop division. They used to rent a vacuum blaster to body shops. It was a great blaster. It was on wheels and had a vacuum head on it and a brush at the end of the trigger handle. It was a slick little blaster. They only rented them at the time. They have since gotten out of the biz of renting them. I called an old contact there a few years back to see if I could buy one. I was too late and they had sold them all off. They had 50# boxes of media that was free to the customer, and the best part was NO MESS! It sucked the media and the rust right back up. The media shot out the gun, but the gun had the brush kinda like a vacuum cleaner attachment for your home vacuum. That's the blaster I wish I had. It was great for small jobs but could be used on larger ones as well. Best part was it was portable, on wheels and held about 150 pounds of media and it had a bucket under the vacuum part that you just dumped out or reused the media IF it was still clean enough. They did not clog either! I know they dumped these of pretty cheap. It had to be a $1000 unit new even back then.
EDIT...here is Snap- On's version.
I had to look this up to see what they did run.
