Those numbers do not match. The last 6 digits of the VIN# are supposed to appear on the stamp pad for an original engine. I suggest you go to the NCRS website and get the specifications guide for your car. This will contain all the numbers information that you could ever want.

Numbers matching means many things to many people. In most cases it refers to a vehicle having an original drive train-engine, trans, rear. There are numbers on many other parts on the car which are judged by the NCRS as to the correctness of the parts. EG: carbutetor, alternator, wheels, brake calipers, etc., etc., etc. What does it all mean? Very little unless you have a rare and very collectible car, in which case you have to worry about fakes. If it is worth enough it can and will be faked, many times to the point where it is undetectible.

Your car is a 1976 by the vin number. The numbers on the front pad are not for that car.

You car is a L-48 and would have one of the following suffix codes.

CKW L-48 with four speed transmission
CKX L-48 with automatic transmission
CLS L-48 with automatic transmission California

The pan shape will ID the tranny. If one corner is cut-th350 If it's shaped like the state of Texas-th 400.......no....really.

According to my book, only the 400 was offered in '76.

Did you find the date code or the VIN derivitive? They should be stamped on the trans.

the number GM 3970014 is actuallly a 1972 block number ... it is located on the rear driver side of the block, next to the bellhousing.
Where are you reading this transmission number from??

The CKD suffix was used for the following ....
CKD 1972 350 Nova 200 L-48 TH350 4-B
CKD 1972 350 Chevelle 175 L-48 TH350 4-Brl
CKD 1972 350 Camaro 200 L-48 TH350 4-Brl

The Tonawanda facility supplied Corvette big block engines, but all Corvette small block engines came from Flint (Michigan).

VIN derivative of the car this engine was originally installed in. 1 indicates Chevrolet; 2 indicates the year (could be 72 or 82); B indicates the assembly plant for the car; 6 indicates the car line series for that year; 80022 is the consecutive unit number of the original vehicle.

Your small block is a Chevrolet engine, but not Corvette.
