Anybody know how, or if it's even possible, to remove doorskins without trashing them? I need to replace rusted door frames but would like to keep the nice skins. Thanks for any help
can be done but a Pita if you don't have to do it. Get replacement doors, save some labor
If your determined to do it the hard way, use a torch to heat the glue from the inboard side and then a sharp putty knife and hammer it between the door frame and skin, work your way around slowly
I removed my door skins to repair rust issues. It is very slow going. I used a sharp knife (sharp on the cutting edge and the end also ground flat and sharp) and a putty knife with some small wood shims to hold the skins away from the frame as I worked my way around the frame.
I did not try heat to loosen the bond.
It goes pretty good around the bottom but at the top it is tricky. You have two surfaces the skin is bonded and it is not very easy to get the bond to break on either. Take you time it is not to bad but very time consuming. And when you get the skins off you will have metal frame work like in the pictre below.
If you have rust problems (like I had) then you get to repair them also.
