Default L88 Airbox

Just for your info on how to glue the air box and how to keep it in place.

Clean everything thorooghly, with acetone or similar. Place your polyester in the freezer for a few hours prior to applying it, that way it will be thick and like a gel instead of a runny liquid. Fill the space between the box and the hood. If everything is solid seal airtight it with some black sealant. Don't forget the flap at the opening.

Ps: this box from Eklers had a poor fit with the hood from Corvette Central.

Thanks for posting this. I have the Eckler's L-88 hood for my '81 and was curious how this would go in. I haven't decided whether or not to put the air box in. I assume you are using the L-88 style air cleaner assembly with this. Do you have pics of it on your engine?

Thanks.

I'm going to be doing this soon as well, I've got a question for you.

Is there any trick to getting the box right where it needs to be to line up with the carb/aircleaner?

My box has been hogged out to fit over a 14" aircleaner but I'm thinking either way both would have tight tolerances.

Thanks for posting this

I will make some pics of the assembly next week (my workshop is 20 minutes from my home) .
Epoxy always works ;-). Remember Polyester on epoxy is a no go, epoxy on polyester is ok. The box is "self lining" and has minimal play. I measured about 12cm (approx. 4 inch) from the black beam at the side to the edge on both sides.

Can somebody tell me what the technical term is for the threaded rod in the center of the carb where you screw the air cleaner lit onto, I need one about an 1/2 inch longer

I call it an "air cleaner mounting stud".

Here are the pictures I promised.

This is the air cleaner base assembly. A complete packet can be ordered at Zip corvette. Mind you complete in the most uncomplete sense. Additionally you need the fire arrest, spacer, tube to valve cover and valve cover insert.

This the air filter and air box in the HOOD. The foam and metal ring are a easy fit.

I needed a spacer to clear the throttle cable. It is not high a enough, I had to bent the cable assm. also.

In addition I cut one row of the fly catcher on the carb. The combination with the Edelbrock performer, spacer and fly catcher was a little too high. I'm still doubting if I will replace the 1/2 inch spacer with an 1 inch spacer, and cut another 1/2 inch of. This way the throttle cable assm. can be straight.

With the cutting of the fly cather I don't need to change the air cleaner mounting rod.

By the way the Carb sucking sound is awesome and you can feel the air flow at the hood opening.

Only thing I'm not sure of is that none of my carb gaskets fits or will stay on. I want to have one between the spacer and the carb en the spacer and the air cleaner base. Any body suggestions?

Default Hood that doesn't match

I noticed this before and finally found a way to deal with it.

The problem!

Both front and back are fitting well and are spot on. It is just the bent profile that has too much curve.

Other side, is ok.

The solution (hopefully):
I heated this side of the hood with a head gun, around 60-80 Deg Celsius. The glue used for bonding the frame (inside) will get a little soft. Apply some load, and pray it works.

The load is about 5 times 8 kilo, rather significant.

Looks spot on with the load!

Just checking!

Next Tuesday I will be in the workshop again. I wil let youknow the result.

Available in the "Help!" aisle at most auto parts stores - buy and cut to size.

The carb has a standard (non-metric) thread. If your parts stores can't get one, I'd be happy to mail one over to you.

Cajos,

2 questions for you,

1) What is he diameter of that air cleaner base?

2) how did your hood fit trick work out?

I may have more air cleaner questions for you later on too.

Hi,

1 I don't know, I have to measure it when I'm in my workshop this weekend. My best guess is 13" slightly smaller than the Mopar cleaner. ZIP sells a kit! Incomplete but a good start.

2 Reasonable, it is down to 5mm from 15mm. I will have a 3dr go this weekend to see If I can close the gap completely. I will use more heat on the "welds" on the support beam (does that make sense?)

Keep'm coming

Cajos,

10mm is pretty good for your 1st try.

Nice job overall, I hope to be able to figure out what I need to do to make my airbox work with my setup soon.

your air box lookes werry different from the one i bought from ecklers. I will have to build up the sides, since the box only is in contact eith the hood in the back, and front. We are talking 1"+
