I am leaking a lot of tranny fluid from my speedo cable where it threads onto the tranny. Its a 1981 automatic. The part that is threaded into the tranny is knurled so it looks like it should unscrew. Is there some kind of seal there that if bad would let the tranny leak there? Thanks.
There is only an O ring that seals the cable housing to the trans. The key is to make sure that the speedo is squarely into the housing and tight along with a good O ring. Make sure your threads are nice and clean make sure the cable is snug and not moving side to side.
There is another seal inside the housing to seal between the housing and the plastic speedo gear, it is a small lip seal held in with a small wire clip. This is removed from the outside end of the housing with a screwdriver or pick tool (a lot easier to do with the housing and gear removed and separated).
If the speed-O bullet / insert is aluminum, it may be worn out.
There are steel replacement bullets available. Often the plastic gear has a groove worn into it from the seal. If so, replace the gear as well.
