I am trying to help a friend with his 82 CE hatch. The glass hatch has
moved toward the rear slightly so that the right rear pin will not hit the
hole in the latch.
In reading some about this, this seems to be a common problem with
these which may be due to the hinge. Has anyone dealt with this problem
and been able to find a sucessful fix?
From what I remember reading here the hinge's stretchs due to use. There was a member here who made some up but it was pretty labor intensive and I beleive he made only so many sets and is not making them anymore, try a search , it was quite a while ago, maybe someone has it saved (the posting) and can add more information for you. Good Luck, Peace,,,Moosie
My 79 has a hatch rear glass that did not make positive contact with the weather seal. You could put a piece of paper between the glass and seal and slide it around the bottom. It turned out the #4 body mounts were rusted and the body settling. After repairing the rusty frame mounts and replacing mounts and shims, it seals fine. My hinge was an aftermarket kit made and installed by Cars & Concepts of MI. After doing this I needed to adjust the driverside pin depth for the latch to keep the pin. You might check you body mounts for rust if the glass hings appears OK.
The hinges were made from crappy steel and due to the fact that the struts are so strong in order to lift the hatch automatically when the hatch handle is pulled , they are under constant pressure from those struts even when the hatch is closed. The result is that the hinges stretch and so the glass does not seal to the weather strip or as with yourself the pins do not mate with the reciever. There is a guy that made some sets from aircraft grade aluminium over on the 82 CE Registry - as has been said I am not sure he is still making them. Check out the registry - lots of info on the topic http://www.crossfire.homeip.net/cftest/default.asp
One solution is to remove the hinges and to squeeze them in a vice until they are back in spec , not for the feint of heart!! The problem with this is that it is only a matter of time before they will stretch again.
Very interesting. Never thought of the body mounts. This one also has space on both sides between the window & weatherstrip. Does Cars & Concepts of MI. have a web site or do you have a phone number?
The hinges appears ok, but you can't tell if they have stretched a little, which as Moosie 982 stated is the usual problem. Maybe the after market ones are made a little heavier.
Britvette, what you described is what I found on these. I have been over on the 82 CE Registry and saw a lot of action talking about making new hinges, but then never could find out if they were in fact made and by whom. I thought of putting the hinges in a vice to bring them back to shape, but with no way to get a replacement if one breaks, and it not being my car, I guess I will let that idea pass.

IIRC, Cars & Concepts made the hatch assemblies for the 82 CEs. Eckler's and others offered the complete parts set to convert non-CE 78-82 cars for a while.

Thanks to you guys for the info.
I am pretty sure that there is a post on the registry that has the exact dimensions/spec for the hinges and so you could measure yours and see if they have in fact stretched - I would be very surprised if they haven't. I do not go to the registry very often as it is pretty inactive. But there are some good guys on there and you can always email some of them to get your answers.

I was told the chrome steel hinges used on my car are stronger than what was used on the later 82CE model. Supposedly, the hinges were designed, along with GM engineers, as a prototype for a future model Corvette. I dunno, I just bought the car for drag racing.

I'll see if I can find someone on the registry to talk to. I did notice that there was not a lot of current activity. There was a lot of talk of someone going to make some hinges to specs of stronger material, but then I could not find where that was done.
Red 69.
Yours do look a lot better than what is on this 82 of my friends.
