I have a 68 with a approx build date of 08-05-68, unit number 27665, curious on what daily production numbers were, and how close this car was built before the change over to 69 model run.

I know that your car is definitley one of the last 68's. i think they started producing 69's in Aug 68. Theres a publication called the "birthday book", which should tell you the car's actual 'roll off" date, compare that to the first 69 roll off dates, good luck, john
Always neat to find another 68 on the forums. Is 27665 a coupe and what are its options and colors?
Please if you will help me with some info. Fisrt your body nuild date located on the inner front of the driver door jamb is or should have the date of body assy, about 5 days before completion give or take.
My database compiled with the help of many has several cars around yours. Car 27757 has a body date of August 03, but is Cordovan Maroon, a rare color. 27769, 27780 and 27817, 27828 all have M03 dates also. 27520 is August 1, or M 01 on the trim tag. Yours should be in here too.
These late 68's are awesome because they have many of the 68 only features, clean fenders (no emblems) and sharp looks with the 69 frame and many of the refinements of the 69 cars. Many have been parted for their "69" frames. Interestingly car #28554 has been spotted as a survivor, 12 from the end!
Please write with some info, and check if you have the late frame, you should!
Very cool info My car is international blue, with the dark blue interior. It is a 327hp 350hp coupe matching # drive train, It has factory 411 rear gears and is a four speed. It also has amber front marking lights, dated 68. I just put in a new interior and the small gauge cluster was dated 69 on the back. Could you give the details of the 69 frame so I know what to look for. I will post back tomorrow after I check it out.

is your small gague cluster smooth or 69 pebbled? My 68 (Cordovan L-79 ) is a May 29 car. It has a smooth cluster but part #s on back are both 68 on one side and 69 on the other......what "69" parts are on late 68's? Thanks, john
There probably Corvettes made on the 15th. The NCRS gives the last day of production as August 16, 1968. The last cars had M 10 assembly dates for the body.
Rick Bizzoco's book on the 69 is a great reference source. There were interior parts that were carried into 1969 production, seats especially, that were being used up. It has been said that 69 interior dash and console parts appeared in 68.
...curious on what daily production numbers were...
It varied. Averaged eight to ten an hour and they ran two, nine hour shifts at the plant. '68 production ended the week of August 16th, 1968. The '69 production run began the following week (August 23rd), so the model year shut down/retool was not very long. Makes sense, since there is very little difference between the 68s and 69s. Early '69s are known to have received leftover '68 parts (girlles, interiors panels, etc).
Go here http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html Type in 1968. Take your Time/Build date and look at the calendar. The plant did not run on weekends or known holidays. You'll be able to determine what day of the week the trim tag was attached to your car. She would not have been complete on that day and would have required another day or day and a half on the line to have been finished.
My '68 has a time build date of April 20th; #41660. She has the smooth center cluser.

Checked the frame at the shop it is a 69 frame, trim tag shows M02. Something else I found when I stripped it down to paint, is there was holes punched for the stingray emblem on the side, these were filled, looked to be the original clip as the bonding material that is holding it on has the same appearance as the rest of the car and I am the forth owner, the two before me said they never done any body work to it, but the car is a calf vette so who know what the first owner did. Great info
So your car's body was August 2, 1968, a Friday and body production was probably over on the tenth. Last assy was the 16th. Please keep the 68 data coming....

Mike,
4/20 is a Saturday. I thought you said they didn't work on weekends and holidays!
My '68 has a Vin tag with a 4/18 date (Thursday). By your information, I suppose it was finished on 4/19 (Friday).

Just curious, is your VIN stamped on the frame to verify it's right for your car? Also, I looked at the NCRS website, you can buy the "birthday book" from then online for 12$..I ordered one. What other 69 parts were put on late 68's??? Thanks john
What location on the frame did they stamp the vin?

I think is above the rear wheel (forget which side) but someone else might be a better source for this. It's defintley there, that way you can make sure it's original.....let me know, thanks, john

They usually did not work on weekends, but there was a one week strike in early April. I've always speculated they were working on 4/20 to make up/keep up production.
Your car could have been finished on 4/18, but that would be the exception. Friday is a better choice, or even Saturday. My car only got her trim tag on 4/20 and I doubt she was finished that day. More likely Monday or Tuesday of the following week.

Driver's side, top of the frame rail in front of #4 body mount. Some people can see these stampings with the body on, others cannot see them. I cannot see the stamp on my '68.
(Knew I had a picture somewhere....I found it. Chalk dust in the numbers make them more legible.)
The VIN derivative is also stamped on the top of the frame rail about where your left hip would be sitting in the car. You cannot see this stamp with the body on.
Original transmissions and engines also got the VIN stamps. You should check both. AIM shows the locations of the stamps.
