Default Thinking about an 82...........Questions

Hello Gentlemen,

I have had two vettes already, a 91 and a most recently a 99. I miss driving a Corvette and so have been looking at some 82's....one of my favorite years.

My father had a 75 and some of my earliest memories are of playing with those great door handles...

Now back to reality, I have no idea what to look for on these cars. I found a nice exaple, 46k miles white with red interior....they want $16k.... Does that sound like it is in the ballpark for a good exaple?

Anything particular to look out for?

Finally, this may be a stupid question, can I run unleaded on an 82?

Thanks in advance for any helpful comments.

Well, that is on the high end for an 82, but not out of the realm of reality. Yes you can run unleded. There are some speific problem areas to look for. Rust is a big problem. Look for it in thr Kickup area on the frame, that is in front of the rear wheels
Look behind the kick panels at the #2 body mounts
Pull the carpet back and loook at the floor on both sides
Look under the Windshield reveal mouding as best as you can
Post some pics of these areaqs, we can help

Make sure it runs good! If the injection system was not maintained it can be fun getting it to run good. If it runs nice and smooth you should be OK. I love my '82, it's a great cruiser, with the OD I get 24-25mpg on trips. Hope you find a winner.
I know of an '82 Collector's Edition for sale that's in great shape, was on the cover of Corvette Enthusiast Dec.'05. They are asking $20K so it can be had for the high teens I'm sure. This was my best friends car and he passed away in Feb. and his widow needs to sell it. I have some pictures of it, pm me if you want to see them.

Looks very nice. Don't pay more than 13,000. Make sure as noted above it's not a fluff job and the bones are good underneath that nice body.

may i ask why an '82 in particular? i don't personally have any problem with them, but i just wonder why you would narrow your choice like that. virtually everything is the same between the '80 through '82 except for the engine management. while not as efficient (theoretically), the end of the carb era was far more 'sorted out' than the beginning of electronic injection. ultimately, i think an '80 would be far more reliable once sorted than an '82, or even an '81. any way you go, it's going to be a great looking car but just keep in mind, they're completely different animals than the later cars.

My thoughts, also. I have a 82 and if I had to do it again it would be a 80 with a 4 speed, which would now be a 5 or 6 speed.

I paid 7k for mine, it needed alittle TLC and a new interior but very rust free, now we're cruisin' in a very reliable car a hundred or so miles every weekend getting 25MPG or so. I love my 82..Good luck !

I think $16K is high for an '82, but a dealer has it. Whatever floats your boat. I'm betting you could shop a while longer and find a lot more car for your $16K.
