I am restoring a 68' and need to know if the inlet and outlet on the muffler is offset or centered. ( the body is off the frame so I can't check this) Also, are the Flowmaster super 40's to loud for a 427. I want the neihbors two know I am coming.
Here's my story....
On my 76, when I bought it, the muffs were round, with center outputs, I suspect originals or original GM replacements....DynoMax sez "these are exact replacement muffs"...so I buy 'em, and gee wizz, not even close...oval with offset outputs...well, I made them fit, had to change the back hanger, and actually, they look pretty good....but to answer the question, I can only assume GM didn't change the C3 exhaust config during it's entire life and 68 and 76 "should" be the same, so "if" MY original muffs were stock, they should be center out...
I think
the muffs should be offset inlet and center outlet. i would run Dynomax Ultra Turboflow stainless muffs instead of Flowmaster 40s. they sound better and do not resonnate in the cab like Flowmasters. idle note is very deep and soft, yet crisp so you can not **** anyone off when you want to be quiet. if you get on it, they bellow out a solid tone that is pleasing to the hot-rod ear. plus the stainless looks great for a long time and will compliment the chrome bumper!
If you want to listen to your stereo don't go 40's, unless you have a zillion watts. I have 40's and it's quite a challenge. Have talked to Flowmaster reps at car shows and they don't even recommend 40's for 'Vettes.
I like my flowmaster 50s (68 vette - L-36), but a couple of points. For me, the 50s were a good compormise between wanting to be heard but not wanting to be too loud. You have to like the sound, because flowmaster sound is very distinctive. A 68 Charger 440 with flowmaster 50s will sound a lot like a 68 vette 427 with flowmaster 50s. The 50s are longer than the stock muffler, so it is a tight fit. Offset in and center out is the stock configuration.

That's a fact! I spent all afternoon one Saturday welding in the Flowmasters for my '69. After about fifteen miles of driving it, the "distinctive" sound and the great gobs of resonance convinced me to turn around for home. I bought some turbo mufflers for it that week, and proceeded to spend another Saturday afternoon welding these in. I'm very happy with the exhaust note now. IMO, Flowmasters are just the bigger brother to the ricer fart cans.

I have a 69 and a 75, mufflers are not even close to being the same!!!!!!
