Hello I am new to the forum and just purchased a 1970 convertible. I noticed the instrument lights are always on. I checked the dimmer switch and it does not turn them off. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I assume that the lights are behaving differently than before? If so, it must be the switch. Otherwise, you might pull the fuse for the lights and see if they stay on. If so, they're getting fed from another source. Keep pulling fuses..one at a time...until the lights finally go out. That last fuse was the source of the power; chase it down until you find it.
When I purchased my vette , someone had done an awful lot of jury- rigging with the wiring at the fuse box . It took me a while but I finally got everything straightened out . They had the instrument lights and the tail lights to where they came on when you turned the ignition switch on .
In the '78 I owned and recently sold, the tach and speedometer lighting worked properly and the console guage lighting stayed on whenever the switch was on, like you're describing.
My problem was the printed circuit behind the console guages. I replaced that and the lights worked normally from then on.
One hint...if you find you have to check behine the guages for any reason, replace all the light bulbs while your there. They're probably all original so if one goes bad, other may follow. You don't want to take the bezel off any more than necessary and the bulbs are cheap...do them all at once.
