Custom C3 ideas....
I've finally narrowed down what I want in a Corvette. Basically, I want a C3 with a modern suspension, brakes, and powertrain, and have been reading in some recent Corvette magazines that such a project is indeed possible. I'd like at least 350 hp to the wheels, a six-speed manual, a refreshed interior, and, of course, a great paint and body job. Nothing fancy, just something that's a blast to drive and will last a long time. In other words, something that runs like a late-model C5 but with a C3 body.
My question is, while 383s and LS engines seem to be the most popular choices, are those the only engine options available? For those of you who have built your own C3s in a fashion similar to what I've described, what did you choose? Are there other engine available that I haven't heard about? And, finally, if I buy a C3 for, say, $15k (I'm interested in a '73, '79 or '80-82), what could I expect to pay for the C5 modifcations? A similar amount, or more?
I'm sure I'm being too general for any one specific answer, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I actually get the car. Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like your plan would be to replace everything anyway. Between an engine, interior, and paint, you'll have no problem putting $15k into it.

Your better off finding a shell with no engine and bad frame for around $1000 and use that as a starting point since every component will be replaced anyways. You can still find a decent restorable driver for around $4000 -5000 (or do like me and get one for $2200!)
After doing that..I think spending at least $40,000 for a complete rolling resto -mod w/ a later model drivetrain would not be out of the question.
Or if you started with an exisitng restored C3......an additional $20,000 would not be unreasonable either.....all this is assuming you do the labor.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
drop weight by at least 600lbs
put in a 383, leave the new gen engine to new gen cars
willwood calipers all round, braided hoses and hydroboost to uprate brakes.
single monospring rear and transverse monospring kit up front.
if you're staying around 350hp and you drive on street rubber i'd bet you won't need to uprate your driveline.
good luck
When I bought the body and frame, the thought was to build an obnoxios street car that would run with a stock Z06 and scare women and children. After several months of back and forth on whether or not to move ahead, I've decided to build it.
Here's my plan for the widebody. (bought at Carlisle last year)
VBP trans leaf front/rear springs, upper/lower A arms, and brakes. (hope to buy at Carlisle THIS year)
Hydroboost.
Steeroids. Check
Guldstrand 5 link rear susp. Check
Van Steel carbon fiber driveshaft, halfshafts. Check
6 spd. (If I can save enough $$$ for Carlisle)
383 stroker w/cross ram webers or efi (I might wimp out on this due to expence). Have block/heads
MSD Ignition. Check
Stainless works shorty headers and sidepipes. Check
Kinda liking the new custom interior pkg offered from MAD
'82 seats (have frames)
Good sound system (not to win any contests, just be heard over the exhaust).
A/C.
Moonroofs. Check
Western Hurricane mags. Check (although I'd like to find 2 10" to replace 2 of my 8's)
Planning on 2455015's up front an 2955015's out back. (BFG or Hoosier's)
Guessing 30-35k before I'm done, hope to begin assembly in the fall.
Bought the body/title for 1k and a bare frame (epoxy painted) for another grand. Should be worth 12 or 13 when I'm done in 3 years...LOL (only partly kidding here). But I'm going to have fun pizzing off the purests and gold chain set cause this one is going to be a runner! /:\

...me too

If you want more than that car offers the take sperkins' and Easy Mike's advice and get the newer car.
I have been wanting that car for over a year but I am too stupid to sell mine and buy it.

But I bet I wouldn't have gotten a thumbs up and a honk from a semi -trucker sunday morning like I did in my 82
I agree that you could have a nice C5 for less and get a better return on your investment.
I have a triple black 04 vert also and love the car but it gets no where even close to the attention the 77 gets

I'm considering selling my C3 for a '01 Z06.
