Default Engine Color

I have a 1980 Red Coupe L48 and had to rebuild the engine. The engine is painted blue.

My question is, what was the original color of the engine when it was new?

I've heard that blue is a ford color for engines. Is this true.

I would like to put it back to the original color if it had one. I'm not sure what to do.

Does anyone know where I can find this information?

Also, can I just use high heat paint from a can?

Please help.

Blue is the correct color. Corvette engines were painted GM Blue (this is not the same as Ford blue) starting in 77. I painted my 79 Chevy orange because I think all small Chevy engines should be Chevy orange. Yes, you can just use high heat paint from a can, just be sure to clean and degrease the engine fully before painting.

He's correct....the blue started in late 77 and continued through the early 80's.From then and to this day GM uses Black.

I used the GM Blue for my '79 L48. I picked it up at Advance/Discount Auto.

Thank you for the information.

I went to O'Reillys and they had a GM Blue and Chevrolet Blue. They were different colors, but mine matched the GM Blue.

Purchased the can and will do the touch up.

I appreciate everyone's help.

Thoroughly degrease before you shoot your new paint.

Between August 23 and September 7, 1976, the Flint, Michigan Engine Assembly Plant changed the paint colors used on Corvette engines from orange to blue. Some early production 1977 Corvettes were still built with the orange painted engines.
