Default Side Pipes; Love / Hate?

Hey gang,

Looking to maybe add some sidepipes on my 82 after paint.

You guys that have them:

1. Would you do it again?

2. Kooks (really sweet looking) or the cheaper Patriot / Dynomax style with vented covers?

Right now I am running glass packs and would hate to loose the killer sound at idle and WOT with the 110 cam. Ironically, no drone in cab.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I would do it again,

I have custom 3.5" mufflers under fiberglass covers. I am using auger mufflers from Speedway racing, 2 per side open center tube.

I have driven 200+ miles and the wind is louder than the pipes.
The augers also flow better than most other solutions and are extremely cheap if you can weld up your own pipe.

Fiberglass covers are painted with HOK metal flake basecoat silver and look pretty good esp in the sun ( not chrome though )

I would do it again too

I have Hooker headers and side pipes - got them from JetHot with their coating. I have the maxflow mufflers. They are definitely loud, but I love the sound and they seem to perform well (as judged by the seat of my pants).

i would do it again also, not only the looks and great sound
but the cabin heat was cut waaaay down after they were installed.

by the way i have the patriots and my opinion, they may be cheap ($205 shipped from Jegs) but they are well made.

I put side pipes on all my C3's..

Much more advantages than disadvantages..

1) They look great
2) Much easier to work on the car without having the exhaust blocking access to everything
3) They sound good with the right mufflers (or without )
4) less cabin heat

The only negative thing that I can think of is that you can burn your leg if you aren't careful

I love them

A c3 with out them looks like it is missing something IMO

Helps keep your vette run cooler under the hood and in the cab.

I also did it again. Had them on my 70 SB. Now have them on my 69BB. Would'nt do any other way. Only difference between my two is this time I sprung for the Jet Hot coating.

Pipes it is!

Yep, after headers, first time in pass seat, after about four miles, wife sez, "my feet are sure getting hot". Looking forward to getting some of that heat out from under the seats!

Thanks!

I am tempted, but I wouldn't be able to get up underneath the car anymore if I put sidepipes on mine.

I was surprised that I could fit underneath the first time I tried.

Of course when I have replaced every single part that could possible break that is accessed from below, I guess I could get pipes then.

For a daily driver, to loud. Weekend cruiser-OK. Did not want to choke engine with reverse flow inserts, will save hooker sidepipes for another corvette build.

The 69 factory sidepipes have the real Corvette sound IMO. Have also used the Hooker nest-of-snakes and they are great too but without any cover, you really have to be careful where you put your leg. The factory ones with the fiberglass insulators aren't nearly as hot.

Same with me......SB & now BB......both factory pipes.....BTW, the pipes on the SB at 9.3:1 were much louder (almost deafening) than on the BB at 8.75:1...
