ok my fuse is good but no power to things i plug in. So I took out the ashtray to see under there, looks to be hooked up. I dont wanna pull my entire console out? is there any ideas as to what's broken and how to fix it.
You may be able to pull off the right side trim and access the lighter base without taking off the console. The 4 screws you took out are for the shifter boot. Put 'em back in....
On my 69, there is a power wire attached to a terminal at the base of the lighter socket with a clip. You may be able to pop out the ash tray and veryify that the wire is connected to that terminal. If you can't see it, you'll need to lift the shifter console up for a peek. Mine had fallen off at one point and was a simple fix.
Also, since there is no Ground wire attached (at least on my 69), verify that the console / shifter plate is securely attached, ie. grounded, to the metal brackets. This is your ground and the lighter will not function without it.
Lighter in my '68 would not work until I ran a separate ground wire from the case to the system ground under the console. Has worked like a charm ever since. Ditto for the clock. A separate ground from the clock case did the trick.
I have an 82 and have removed/replaced my shifter console. Sounds like you removed the screws to the shifter boot. Try removing the trim piece first (someone else suggested that). Can likely get access to the plug/socket if needed. It's a very simple device. Trim has three screws. Might need an offset screwdriver to get to one of them or really mash the seat cushion down.

I agree with all the points above. I tried using mine to power a portable CD player the other day and it would not work even though the lighter gets warm. Turns out the contact at the base of the lighter socket was lightly rusted. Pulled the neg from the battery and cleaned up the contact point in the socket with a light wire brush on a Dremel. Did the trick...works like a charm.
The cig lighter is on the left side of the consol isn't it? I would remove the side panel off the console and access it from there. The single pin contact on the bottom is a pos and they frequently fail, the socket gets full of junk too.

Oops, yes. Cig lighter is more on the left side. I would try removing the LEFT trim panel first. Even though, to loosen, not completely remove, the shifter panel, you need only remove six screws I believe (been a while since I removed mine). I do recall that a couple of them, toward the rear of the panel, were moderately challenging to put back in....involved speed nuts and getting them aligned just right.
