I just finished a 500 mile roundtrip and about half way home I noticed my vm reading a nat's hair from red. Obvious its a charging issue. Can you pro's talk me through a quick troubleshooting - I need to fix it without getting ripped by the local mechanics.

A hair from red on the left or right? If its on the right about 14 volts thats OK
Understand, you think your overcharging based on what you saw on the voltmeter in the dash. My point is that the stock gauges are not calibrated to 3 decimal places, it could easily be off a full volt or more. To determine the gauges acuricy, you need to measure the voltage at the alternator and compare it to the gauge.
You might be overcharging, or you might not. Got to test it to find out
