Default Critter Proofing

I know this isn't the storage season, but since we use our Vettes all summer, the steel bodies stay outdoors mostly unused. I went to drive my truck the other day and no OD or torque converter lockup. Hmmm. Onto the hoist where I found some critter chewed up all the wiring on the harness to the transmission. In the winter, even with mouse poison put out, I end up with lots of green pellets in the engine compartment of the Vettes, but no damage, so far. Janet suggested that since we keep critters away from our plants with LIQUID FENCE (tm) spray, we should spray it around the tires of cars not being used to keep mices from crawing up and into the vehicles. So far, using it on the truck (tire tread and exposed underside wiring) has resolved the current problem. Maybe that will work for cars in winter storage, too. Smells like pee when you put it on, but the smell goes away - protection stays. My dog pees on only Fords, so only my Explorer gets year round, free protection

We need a General Community forum area for posts like this that don't apply to a specific series, but for everyone in general. Am I missing that?

I put large boughs of pine in your nooks and crannies and the rodents stay away. The story goes that the rodents don't like the smell of decaying pine.
I did this for the last couple years and no rodent problems in the car (I do have rodents near and likely in my garage). I also keep a couple outdoor cats (they kind of adopted our yard...good hunting grounds, lots to eat). They control my rodent population and I encourage their enforcement will a litte tuna here and there. Pisses off my indoor cats. I guess you could say I have "guard cats."

Good idea. I have lots of pine trees in the yard and kinda like the smell anyway. I just trimmed a bunch so have some stock.

(Advertisement ) Hey, while I'm thinking of it, we're having an All Corvette show in Lansing on July 7, and an AutoX at Spartan Speedway in Mason on July 28. See Capital City Corvette Club at www.cccorvette.org for more info. I'm VP/Competition. Nice drive from G.R.

I had a serious problem a couple of years ago - took a turn and peanut sized newies fell out of the heater outlets - and [I didn't know] also a nest under the rear portion of the console. I put poison out and it helped briefly - except the family under the console died and began to rot - yes, there is something that will overpower the exhaust fumes!!!! It took me weeks to get it all cleaned out.

Someone told me to stick dryer sheets in the heater and vent holes (just far enough so you can't see them) and set a couple of paper cups with mothballs on the floors when storing for the winter. I now keep dryer sheets tucked in out of site in several places. Haven't had a problem since - but I paid my dues!!

If you are missing that, I am, too. I've wished for a long time that this forum had just such a section. I've suggested it a few times, but it's gone nowhere. If you can get it to happen, I'll buy you a few chilly-pops!

Be well,

SJW

I'll see what I can do. I hate to cross-post, and I'm sure those with other series cars have the same general problems. Maybe if someone reports this post one of the moderators will look at it and catch the hint
