Feel lucky?

1. nothing will happen

2. you get a spike and fry the circuit board. Spend $60 on a new board and then decide you should have kept the filter.

depends if you want to take the chance.

Filters out unwanted electrical "noise" that may affect the way the tach works

The Tach filter is more of an RF filter designed to reduce noise that could be heard on the radio.
It does very little to protect the tach from spikes on the tach signal line.
The tach circuit board already has a filter on board that protects it from overvoltages on the tach signal line.
The most common failure of this vintage of tach is a blown zener diode on the POWER lines.
