We've recently bought a 74, 454. The previous owner said the only thing that the air conditoning unit needs is to be recharged, he put a new condenser coil on it and then somehow unhooked a hose or something and let ALL the refrigerent out. Of course the car had R 12 in it and I have priced it on ebay and it's as you all probably know not cheap. What I need to know is how much is needed to completely fill the system? I have an garage in my area that says he can install the freon if I can get it. So guys how much do I need and any suggestions on this problem would be much appreciated.
P.S. If it wasn't for the fact that my english bulldog needs air this time of year I'd say the heck with it and just take off the T-Tops!
Not sure how much.my guy just did mine lasted A week Then The 32 year old hose dumped it all on my Hot exhaust manifold. So Check your hoses first if there not new dont add the stuff yet. it will go up in smoke white smoke.
Not sure on a 74, but on a 71 is 3.25lbs of freon. 10oz of oil. Thats an A6 compressor, I assume a 74 is the same although it uses the VIR instead of a POA valve. Not sure if there is a difference in capacity.
We used 3 cans of R12, 1 can of (4oz can) of Sealer/leak detector (which also had 2 oz of R134). I am still using the original liquid line and low pressure hose but the high pressure hose(one with the muffler) was replaced. So far, so good.
Talk to your ac man about putting nitrogen in to check leaks on system. As expensive as r-12 is this would be cheap insurance. Added benefit nitrogen will dry system out, but you should still replace drier.
