Default Antenna Problems

This is making me crazy. My anttenna quit working but the motor stll works. So i get the rebuild kit sounds simple enough except the new mast will not go all the way into the antenna I can force it thru the pull it out with pliers but it is too tight a fit to glide the way it needs to seems to be just aa hair to wide at the fitting where the mast and nylon cord come together. So I guess I will buy a new unit from Riks or Mid America. I have one concern I disconnected the anttnna cable and the power to it fome behind the rear speaker and pushed the grommunt out. What is the trick to getting a new connector thur that grommunt? I guess I can cut the old connector and pull the wires out but between the antenna cable and that connector I have no clue how to pass then thur the little peice of rubbber. Has someone done this before?

Default Broken cable?

You might have some broken plastic cable inside your motor. Take it out and see. If there is cable inside it won't let all the new cable in.

Yes, and no. I've fixed my TA antenna before. You don't put in a new mast. You put in a new strip of plastic/nylon that has gears cut on one side. Hit the switch, feed it in with the geared side facing the right way. If it doesn't go far enough along the spiral to the gears on the motor it's because the geared nylon strip that was already in there broke off - as mine did. Had to take off the side of the motor housing, pull the pieces of nylon out, lube it back up nicely, put the housing back on and shove the new strip in until the motor gears caught the end of the strip. The new strip will have directions. It can get tricky because the new strip will be in the completely out of the car, laying on the fender, mast. Helps if you have someone else hitting the radio to fire up the antenna motor.

I just bought a kit from Corvette America for my 82. It does not have any gear notches on it.

Doh!
In that case these type power antennas are outside my experience.
Just posted what I'd gone thru fixing antennas on my other cars.
I'll be quiet now.

Are you sure you don't already have an aftermarket antenna? That would explain the tight fit.

Default I got a NEW MAST and RIBBON from ANTENNAMASTSRUS.COM

Don't know how you would attach just a ribbon. My NEW MAST came with the ribbon attached inside. Had to drill out the plastic rivets on the motor to get the 6" piece of broken ribbon out so it would take up all the new ribbon. Took about 20 to 30 cycles before it went ALL THE WAY DOWN. Lubed the gears with white lithium grease before reassembling the gear cover. Was PRETTY DRY and DIRTY. Works like a charm. Cost $13.50 plus $6.00 shipping. Took about 2 hours to do.
mostly to get it out and back in without scratching the car. On a C5 you just take out the left most rear taillight lens, Thats ALL. BIGHANK
