So I purchased my first Vette on Sunday, not even a week yet, it's a '79 L-82, one of the "rare" vettes I've come to find out the guy I bought it from didn't know his *** from a hole in the ground. I love the car but the guy was a dink. I was told it was all original but from what I've read it looks like the engine doesn't match the car. Here's what I pulled off of the engine:
V0102DR(E or F) and
19L564115
My VIN# is 1Z8749S441336
So from what I've read, this isn't the orignal engine, correct?
I LOVE the car regardless, just want to know if I paid too much at $7K. The odometer says 54K. New paint, although it was done by Maaco it still looks decent and the original paint color was used. The interior is "ok". No cracks in dash. Seat leather all probably 90%. Carpet is faded but no holes. The underside of the car was FILTHY and I have a small tranny leak which I'm trying to pin point. But I'm a little bummed to find out that this probably isn't the original motor. Can anyone give me a little insight into the engine ID? Thanks.

Welcome and congrats! And $7K for what you describe, NOM or not, is a pretty good deal. You could part the thing out for more than you paid if you wanted to. But it sounds like you'll have a great time driving it.
You are in the right ballpark with what you paid. According to your serial number, it IS an original L82 car. If it were an L48, it would have an 8 after the 1Z....
Whether your engine block is original or not, I don't know. Hop down to Barnes and Noble, buy a coffee and look at the corvette black book. All will be revealed.
Welsome to the 79 club. Lots of good info here on the boards!
thanks for all the welcomes!! I will have a great time with this car. If any of you are technically inclined. I'm going to be posting something in the tech section. I've got a tranny leak, it doesn't seem major, but it's just enough to **** me off. I just replaced the pan gasket but something is still leaking. It looks like it may be coming from the left side where the shift linkage goes in to the tranny. The drops of tranny fluid come from the bottom lever of the shift linkage. Anyways, as this is the wrong forum to get a response in, if anyone has any input on this as well, I would appreciate it. Thanks!!
I would rather have a non matching engine than a matching wore out engine.
look at Camaros, if they have a "crate engine" the price goes up $10,000
I don't want a transplanted 69 307 but just about any year 350 is a good start.

Dont worry about '79s being the least rare Corvettes out there or that the motor is wrong; you got into in cheaply and you should be able to have a blast with it. You learn on your first cars.
I have to ask this. I sound like a broken record on this forum when I whine to people about checking the numbers yourself even when the seller says they are original. I point out that first time buyers do this EVERY DAY and you are yet another example.
My question is this: did he just say, "yes the numbers match" ? and you just believed him? Did it occur to you to check? Most importantly, after he sold the car to you presenting it as numbers matching, did you go back to him after you found out otherwise? I know you have no protection, but this would seem like an understandable thing to do. I can't imagine not asking him what the deal was.

Good advice. I've have never so much as even looked at a Corvette without checking the numbers.

So far it doesnt look like the engine numbers match up, but keep looking. Thje numbers will be on the front of the block on the passengers side just under the AIR. The serial number indicates that the car started out as an L82, just kepp digging., but so what? You got a Good deal on the car. Drive it and have fun and you can also learn with it. This forum rocks, you can learn a lot here. There are no stupid questions so dont be shy..Good Luck and congrats. ......LT
