LTL carriers all have approximately the same rates. Find a friend who has a company that ships things with one of these LTL carriers. Typically, they will have a discount in the range of 60% to 65%, depending on how much they ship and how good of a discount they are able to negotiate. Ship it on their account number so you will get the discount, then reimburse your friend's company for the cost of shipping.
I had a Pontiac 455 engine block shipped from Idaho to Seattle via ABF using my company's discount and save about $200 this way.

Are you shipping an auto or manual? I got a manual shipped by UPS a few years ago in a cardboard box. Cost me around $60. That was like 5 years ago though. I just had a kids 4 wheeler shipped to a local terminal and the freight was less than $300 and I'm sure the company I bought it from made money. Check with Con-Way, Old Dominion, Averitt, or one of the USF companies. Usually terminal to terminal rates are not that bad. Home delivery is more.
