What the hell are you thinking? These things will send you to the poor house. Tough choice to make. Long term collectable, definitely a bumper car. Easy entry, most anything '74-'82. Fiberglass on later model cars is definitely better than the early ones, but the bumper cars do it for me even though I own an '80. I just happen to really like the '80-'82 cars and the prices on them are relatively cheap.
Forget the "balance" issue. The car will never be a slalom/autocross winner without extensive upgrades. (ie DDCART) You are PROBABLY looking for a good comfortable cruising car and for that the balance is a wash.
Give me a 1973 BB 4 speed A/C coupe anyday. $ for $ it'll be tough to beat.
Everyone is different about T-Tops and Ragtops. In its day, the T-Top was remarkable in design and cost more than a vert. I have had both over the years and currently have one of each. The convertible is like a totally different car than the T-Top. I would gladly swap out my 72 T-Top for a similar ragtop. Others prefer a T-Top. I love my old 74 Ragtop 454
i remember looking for a vette a couple years ago. i was 15, and i wanted a car like my dad had back in the 60s. he first had a '67 427/390 4-speed vert, then a '68 427/390 4speed. well even 2 years ago i couldn't afford either, so i went with a 1977 which has a small block in it. sometimes i wish i would have gotten a big block and a vert, but after doing some things on the 350, it's still a very powerful engine. and i think the t-tops are also more practical for me as this is my daily driver...i don't think i'd every trade my ette for anything. i'll just buy another one
I purchased a frame-off 71 vert about 9 months ago after spending a bunch of time reading posts here and reading the book mentioned above (and some others). After doing a lot of research on various sites, I stumbled on GM Down Under in Costa Mesa, CA. John spent a TON of time answering my silly questions as I spent several hours in their shop. You may want to check-out their site (http://www.gmdownunder.com). They shoot straight and they really love Corvettes...
