As far as door rust goes, make sure those drain holes don't get clogged.

It's called a vapor barrier. The doors a designed for water to flow thru, in the top out the drains on the bottom. All cars made have a vapor barrier between the door and the trim panel. The C3 used a plastic sheet. You can buy plastic sheeting at home depot and cut your own, the are not molded. They are held in place with dum-dum or called strip caulking at NAPA, it is cheap. It serves several functions, keeps water from splashing on your trim panels, acts as sound insulation, and and heat, cold insulation. It should have no effect on the fit of the trim panel. They never fit well anyway.

Mid America has them. P.43 in the interior section.
