chambered exhaust
Hey all.
I've heard good things of chambered exhausts. I've also heard a friend's mustang with them. Very mellow but nasty too.
Anyone using them?
Anyone know offhand the diameter of the passthrus in the frame brace?
Don't know that it would be the smartest thing I've ever done to pass them thru the brace. Can't say why, I've just never had the option of doing that before. There might be issues for and against that routing, dunno. Just at the moment I've got dual cats and glasspack dual tips on the back coming off coated headers. Don't particularly like the welding/clearances on the job. The cats may stay on until after the car is inspected. Never hurts to copper all your bets
I work at night but what the hell, the neighbors hate me already.
I have chambered pipes. I get compliments all the time (not from my neighbor. Although she always gestures with her hand that I am number one!)
Anyway, at idle it sounds like a muscle car should. Deep low tones. At cruise, you can easily have a conversation with your passenger or listen to the radio and at WOT, all hell breaks loose! It'll make little kids run for cover.
On pre 75 cars, the exhaust is routed thru the x-member. I'd guess that you could put a 3" pipe in there with a bit of clearance as not to hit.
I personally dont like the sound. They sound like glasspacks to me. Also, I've read numerous posts about them being restrictive and robbing power. Do a search, they have been discussed many times.
I have them and I love them, they sound great and were very easy to install. Just make sure you also get the mounting bracket that bolts to the tranny mount
I have a 2 1/2" system from MidAmerica. While I like the sound and performance gains, they fit like crap. I know there's some other vendors out there that sell chambered systems, too. Just don't get it from MidAmerica. Do yourself a big favor and read this thread:
I had them from the mfg, not M/A. The fit was as bad, had to have a shop cut and fab them to fit. They were loud but not to my liking. Had them on a 69 & 75 and finally sold them. Went with flowmaster 40 & 50's. If you want loud get the 40's. Performance felt better but didn't do any trials. Years ago here there were several guys who did and found the chambered were more restrictive. To each his own, hopefully the fit is better these days.
I had them on a 64 I sold and loved the sound. I put a set on my 70 BB and love the sound. My son said, "hey dad, they are a little loud aren't they". But, not too loud. Good sound. I bought both sets off Ebay from the same guy. The fit was perfect, no problems. I am pretty certain the Ebay name of the guy was hrvette.
I have had Mid America Chambered exhaust on my header equipped 73 for a few years now. They fit and sound great. It is a seat of the pants feeling, but the car goes very good!
I replaced my mufflers with the chambered pipes on my 76 and it sounds great. you can hold a conversation when talking but when you get on it....Look out!

I have 2 cats and the split targa tips. I'll be pulling the cats now that the inspection is done but had been considering replacing the cats with the chambered exhausts. Should give me good flow and between the chambered and the tips should give me at least a gesture at noise control.
My only problem is the squirrley piping on here now. Passenger side comes straight thru the crossmember and out like 34<?> inches to the first bend. The driver side pipe comes out the crossmember and angles into the other cat.
I'm a little afraid to replace the entire back end as I don't have a spare carrier at the moment and don't want to pipe it blind. What length are your chambered mufflers? I know that several places make the length to order.
It's OK, I work at night and the neighbors hate me anyway....
I did MAD's for a couple of years until my old ears got too tired of the resonance. The installation was easy after figuring out what needed to be done since MAD did not supply instructions. Overall the MAD product was acceptable both in price and in durability. However, after 2 years, I was ready for something more suited to a 53 yr old.
I have the Allen's 2.5" aluiminzed steel chambered exhaust on my otherwise stock 72 LT-1 and it sounds great. Delivers the Corvette side pipe type sound at idle and is nice and loud under acceleration.

I probably have the same 4 muffler Allens system and it sounds just like the old side pipes. Practically everyone that's heard my car calls Allen's. If you purchase a chambered system, it's best to deal directly with the manufacturer so you know what you are getting. As with any packaged exhaust system, cutting and fitting is required. The manufacturers make the pipes longer than necessary so you can obtain the best fit.
This comes up almost every other month. So far no one has posted any numbers. So without data, it's all
I gained 2.5mph in the quarter opening the dumps in my exhaust so I'd say they are restrictive.

I added a crossover pipe just behind the transmission crossmember and it toned down the sound a bit. Without it, it was a bit too harsh for my liking after 15 minutes of driving.

I agree. The fit is bad but it is cheap so you get what you pay for.
Hi
I installed chambered exhausts few years ago that I bought at corvette show at Carlisle PA.
You can listen to the sound in this link. http://youtube.com/watch?v=kwh4JXPshfE

Damn, I'll be 51 in a month. Might not be able to justify putting them on if I've only got 2 more years before the ears go.
