Hi : I'm new. Just bought a white 79 corvette, I will post an intro a bit later but for now I need to rant.
So, I want to get my car on the road of course, and I applied for insurance through Hagerty because they were highly recommended. It's been 48 hours, so I contacted them to see if they need something from me, and they tell me I've been denied insurance because I'm 24 and got a speeding ticket 4 years ago. I was really shocked... sorry, I wish I could control my age, and I'm sure as hell more mature than 90% of the older folks I deal with every day. And who doesn't have a speeding ticket? It was one of those 3mph I-actually-just-wanna-measure-your-lifted-truck deals.
I understand they have policies and all but jeez... I've always been able to get great insurance on other vehicles no problem. Never been in an accident or filed a claim, ever. What a downer
Try your regular insurance company and see if they have a collector car policy. There was a simular situation to yours in a post a week or so back. It might not be as cheap as a regular Hagerty policy but at least you'll be abale to drive your new toy. Here's a link to one on State Farm Collector car policy. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1750801

Welcome to the Forum.
i would go the regular insurance route until you turn 25, once 25 i dont believe you will have any trouble getting the insurance unless the vette is your only vehicle. if thats the case most wont insure you as they will assume you are using it for a daily driver.
Welcome to the C-3 crowd and sorry 'bout the insurance. I know they are tough, but that is because their rates are so much cheaper they have to make sure the risk is low. Sometimes life just ain't fair. Is this your daily driver?
No I actually have 2 Wranglers for my DD's... the vette will always sit in my comfy climate controlled locked pole barn nice and safe with a 24 hour camera on it... except for car shows and the occasional drive to keep things flowin'.
I just applied for insurance through Grundy, and I'm also going to give my Progressive agent a call like you guys suggested. Thanks for the advice
Well I contacted my Progressive agent, and turns out they go through Hagerty for classic cars, so that option is out. I just talked to a State Farm agent and they're supposedly going to call me back tomorrow. Didn't sound very promising though
Oh heck, I'm going to start my own insurance agency.
I have Allstate, and they wrote a collector insurance policy with Hagerty, through Allstate. Allstate vouched for me, and the deal was done. I am not sure if the age will even come up, the mileage on the car didn't.
19 years since my last one.
When my agent is shopping insurance, to get the preferred deals you need ZERO tickets, Zero claims and a certain credit score....no matter what your age!
A friend was rejected from one policy because he has two windshield replacement claims in the past 5 years!!!! Anytime you make a claim it is on some sort of public data for the insurance industry.

In Ca. and maybe wherever you're at, my 69 is the same rate as a regular 69 Chevy, with AAA. Full replacement value, no milage limitations. Not sure about the 24 thing.

I also use Allstate, full coverage as if it were a regular low mileage car.
What is the difference between regular coverage and collector coverage?
Collector coverage costs me about $250 a year, you can drive your car to club events, I belong to three clubs, there is supposed to be a mileage restriction, 3000 a year I think.
The biggest reason to have it here, is that you don't have to get the vehicle emissions testing done.
as an "insurance guy" (not an agent) I'd be interested to know who insures your jeeps? Then what city & state you live in. You didn't mention it, but did you try to add the vette to your jeep policy? Don't take this wrong but a '79 may not have a high enough value to need the collector insurance markets. Pricing for liability coverage is a based on zip code (big city = high premium), vehicle type & hsp., number of estimated miles driver annually, driver's age and driving record (accidents & tickets) and often your credit rating. Comprehensive & collision coverages are based on statistical cost to replace/repair the vehicle. Most standard markets will insure your vette on what's called a value-stated policy - you tell them how much you want to insure the car for and they apply a rate/$100. I recently added my 1977 L-82 to my existing AIG policy for $100/6 mo. for full coverage and a 3000 mi/yr restriction.

Damn!! a woman after my own heart!!! I got my C3 parked next to my CJ-7 and Cherokee!!
I've never had a speeding ticket while driving a car. I did get a 15-over speeding ticket on my bicycle in my college/bike racing days though. I was going 40 mph on a 25 mph bridge (at the bottom of a BIG hill) with a police car right behind me and crossed a double yellow line to pass a van. In addition, a sign on the bridge told cyclists to walk their bike across on the pedestrian lane. I was SO busted.
Ah, yes. That was when I was young and foolish. Now I'm no longer young. (I'm still working on the foolish part. The no-longer-young part just happens.)
I have State Farms "Collector Car Insurance" on my Trans Am. My policy states that NOBODY under the age of 25 can drive it so you may be out of luck with them.

with me it's not if I got one. ..it's how many and what is the fastest I've been clocked at. ..With about 2,000,000 miles under the belt. ..I have had a few...fastest I got clocked at 114 MPH by one of Keystones finest..
