Default New Guy on site

Hey everyone,

Just registered after spending A LOT of time on the site gleaning bits (and stacks) of wisdom from some Vette Masters.

I just got my '82 Vette this weekend, and here are a few issues I need help with (Please?!): (By the way, I know some of the questions are going to sound silly, but I've been looking for a good manual here in town for two days. No Chilton, Haynes didn't have the diagrams I needed.)

1. My wipers don't work at all. I was glad to hear there was part of the wiper system behind the seats, 'cause I thought I was losing my marbles when I heard a clicking when trying to turn them on.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram of wipers? Where the heck is the fuse? Which leads me to-

2. Does anyone have a picture of the '82 fuse box. I need to know what leads to what. I have already replaced most of the fuses, but wipers still don't work.

3. No power steering. Where do I begin to look after fluid and belt?

4. A saw a thread yesterday about a member regretting he had a cross-fire engine. My Vette is no screamer either. What would you wizened ones suggest? Upgrade chip, new exhaust (love those side-pipes), or, if it's even possible, a new intake manifold with a good old Holley on top.

I believe that's it (for now )

Thanks for any help!!

Get 2 books. First, the 1982 service manual. Then get the assembly manual. Mid America, Corvette America carry them. Welcome to the Corvette Forum.

Answers for 1, 2, and 3. Get the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) for your car. All of the major Corvette parts vendors have them. Helms has the year specific repair manuals, again available through the major parts vendors. Wiring diagrams, fuse locations, and troubleshooting information for most if not all of your cars fuel and electrical systems as well as the major drive train components, brakes and steering. Also on 3 pump may have failed, power ram defective, or bad control valve. Steering is a recurring topic here on the forum, and there are several solutions, (rack and pinion, Jeep steering box, Concept One Steering box) including fixing your old system properly. For 4, a new cam would help, intake and a Holley, yes, or Edlebrock, or even an old, properly rebuilt Rochester Q-jet. Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

Welcome to the forum and the madness of C3 ownership.

No one said it yet so I will, PICS, would be nice so the rest of us can admire your new toy. Get the AIM, available most vendors. Partial list of vendors for you also: Doc Rebuild, Ecklers, Zips, Riks Corvette Parts, MIdamerica, corvette central, corvette america, willcox, VBP, Al knoch , the last detail corvette parts, Davies corvette parts to name a few. Check ebay for 82 GM service manuals, about 40-50 bux with all the diagrams you'll ever need. Never heard of any wiper part behind the seats?? Good LUck and WElcome, and post pics,
ESU

Sorry, but I strongly disagree... If ya want headaches make the rochester quadrajunk a consideration... Personally, I'd go with a holley..

Default New guy again,

Hello again,

Funny how just one little sentence may have drastically changed most of the responses I've gotten. That sentence is:
"Since I live in Florida and it rains whenever it wants, I would like to fix this wiper problem, if possible, before I get my manuals."
(I'm not THAT big of a Bubba, Ha!)

Hi and welcome to the madness of C3 ownership.

I’ll start with the most controversial question first - FLAME SUIT ON... how to improve performance on the crossfire. You CAN get there from here; several guys have improved performance or are actively doing it by swapping from the TBI to a carb. The easy way to do it follows.

Step 1. Pull radiator cap off of your ’82.
Step 2. Back the car out.
Step 3. Pull in the ’79 to ’81 of your choice assuming you want to keep the fast back look.
Step 4. Replace radiator cap.
Step 5. Mod away!

There you have it! Seriously, you’ve got to give the crossfire system a chance. A properly tuned crossfire, that means all the smog crap, hoses, sensors etc in place will run great. Factory claims were 200 HP, 285 Ft Lb Torque and a 0 – 60 times of 7.9 seconds. That’s pretty good for 1982. Coupled with the then new 700R4 transmission the car is relatively quick and gets phenomenal gas mileage. Mine turns 26+ highway and 15 or so in town. It is what it is, a great cruiser but NO racer.

Can you enhance it some? Yes, but talk about problematic. The flow of the intake/heads is a big problem. Urban legend is that GM sabotaged the crossfire intake. Check out the picture below from http://www.swko.net/~lionsden/crossfire.htm .See the port on the right? Note the dark area, that’s the gasket to the head. See how narrow the ports on the intake are compared to the head and how abrupt the transition? Note the port on the left has been opened up. Several guys have done this and other things to really open the cars breathing up; lots of info out there. Be sure to check out the Crossfire Injection vault.

I have a second intake/TBI setup and plan to do some work on mine but have put it off for now. Too many competing priorities and my ’82 is running great!

So, my .02 cents, leave well enough alone for now. Learn the CFI system and get the most out of what you’ve got. Then look to mod the car.

Here are two scans for the wipers from the AIM. Hope these help. PM me if you need more. Good luck!

Back of dash.

Fuse Box.

The click you hear is the "pulse module". It always clicks. Thats not your problem. This may help...

Big G always seems to know what he's talking about, so I'd recommend listening to him. Yeah, I know he's from Texas, but he still knows his stuff. Weird.

I meant no disrespect to big_G. I just wanted to go out and play, that's all. Mea Culpa!

Order a reproduction owner's manual. If you have an original with the car, take it out and store in in a safe place in the house. Keep the repro in the car. Most of what you've asked is in the owner's manual.
