Those are actually stickers, they were on the car when I bought it. From 10+ feet away they look like real gills. Here's a far-away shot, I'll take a close-up later today. They're very well made, they're 4 individual stripes and they shade from front to back to look really realistic.
How did you get an opening rear hatch on what looks like a 79???
Yes, it is a 79. The rear hatch was installed by Cars and Concepts of MI shortly after the car was purchased new. They designed a hatch kit that was marketed for the mod. From what I was told, the design was done working with GM engineers as a prototype for the 82 CE model. The hinges do not look anything like the *@ model hinges, however. The PO owned a Corvette shop in MI and had some interesting history on the car.
