Is there a trick to getting the power antenna to work with a modern radio? Just installed a Pioneer radio and I can get radio stations but its not using the stock antenna; it's still retracted.

There is a remote wire similar to an amp remote wire that tells the antenna that the head unit is on radio and that it needs to power up. If that wire, usually blue or blue/white, is not connected to the antenna then it will never know it's supposed to be pulling in a signal.
Check the manual and you should see a wire for amp remote and for antenna remote. Figure out which of your stock harness wires was the antenna remote and connect the two.
Maybe the same in '82 but don't know for sure, in '78 the antenna relay wire was yellow. If the color scheme is the same then this is the wire that should connect to the blue/white wire coming from your radio that DB is talking about.
