Default Changing AC freon

When converting the AC from R-12 to R-134a do you have to change the O rings and drain the oil from the compressor? The compressor is original.

I would evacuate the old system and put in the new freon/oil and run it like that. If you have a problem, then look into replacing o-rings. (yes, to do it the right way, you should replace the o-rings)

Drain the old system, replace the freon and oil with R134 and try it out. If you have no leaks - then you don't have a problem. I bought R134 with a dye that shows up under ultra violet (shows up as yellow/green) - so far no leaks in my system

I am not sure, but I think you also need to replace the drier. Perhaps there is more on this in some old threads.

Evacuate system, change compressor oil, flush system, replace drier, replace O-rings, install R134a adapters, vacuum system, charge with R134A using 80% of the R12 amount specified.

You might want to read this, it has some good information regarding the POA valve.
