So when you remove the wire from the sensor the meter stays pegged? That indicated a ground on the sensor side of the gage. removing the wire the gage should go all the way cold, with it grounded it should go full hot. Disconnect the wire and check for voltage, if its not there you have a short on the sensor wire

Hey Sixfooter, my car is a 71 the gauge has 3 wires. I installed the cluster in order to check temp on my engine for proper tuning. All my harnasses are new except for the dash .Like I said the guage was fine in the cold position and did not move and all of a sudden I looked and it was pegged way beyond the high temp side and it stayed there even after the switch was off and the wire was disconected.Could it be that I need to ground something on the interior harness. Also can you tell me on which wire should I have voltage. Thanks for the help

on the back of the gage should be 3 terminals: 12V, Ground and signal.
Since you had the ash out, sounds like it needs to come out again. I don't have a diagram for a 71, but I can't imagine its any different than my 81. There is a Dk Green wire on the sensor, drivers side head. Take it off and test it for voltage, there should be something about 12v. If its significantly less than that there may be a short to ground somewhere on that wire. Since the dash was out I would think thats the place to look first, I don't have a pic of the back of the gages, but I'll check this evening. Here is a diagram for my 81
