I tried last year myself. I got Historic plates full-well knowing that it was due for smog.

I got the registration bill and sure enough; it said "Smog Required" even for HIstoric plates.

So I went back to regular custom plates and registered at a high altitude zip code. No smog required now

I lived in San Diego and also San Francisco for a while in the eighties. Loved both places but the weather costs alot. I live in Missouri where my house has been paid off and when you get historical plates you pay one time and never have to go to the DMV again unless you have to have the vanity Historical plates. 25 year old car - You get 1000 mi a year and no inspections or smog ever again. God bless America Even California

Right. No more rolling 30-year exemption. That's what caused me all the grief with smogging it. When I put the engine in years ago, I had just smogged it with the OEM motor.

then I built the stroker and put it in, knowing that by the time two more years had passed and it's smog turn would come up, it would be at the 30-year rolloff. But just months before my reg was due, the law changed and I got the smog notice.

So I got Historic plates. But they still wanted smog. So I went back to my regular custom plate and registered at my cabin in Julian. :o -- And I can drive it all I want now.

Apparently the DMV computer system is pretty dumb and still tries to ding you with smog, even with the plates. If you go down to the dmv office they'll exempt it through because the whole point of historic plates is that you're not driving it often enough to need to smog.

In my case, they never even sent me a renewal notice becaues I got the plates like a month and a half before the renewal was due.

I just got back from the Oceanside DMV (that's about 30 miles North of San Diego). I told them I want to register "Historical" on my '76. The bag at the counter insisted that I still needed a smog certificate and sent me packing. I think you got lucky getting yours through. My next plan is to rent a trailer space for my 5th wheel in Julian for a couple of months and try to register it there like Paul did.
I am capable of getting my car in compliance even though it's a ton more work (2003 Z06 LS6 engine) I just really want to set my car up with Hookers and side pipes. It's really stupid beacuse my car is identical to a '75 which is exempt. These laws suck.

$400,000 might get you a condo. I just sold one in San Rafael (10 miles North of the Golden Gate) for $395,000. I probably could have got more but the HOA fees there are $390 per month.
Hard to find a decent house for under $500,000.

It's so easy here in Ohio. 25 years and older = no smog check! Even my 81 doesn't even have to go, because I know that thing would never pass. Ya, the snow sucks, but you learn to deal with it (snowmobile!!)

I have run Historic plates on my Texas Vette for 4 years. Had plenty of Law Dogs pull up beside me, behind me, and pass me. Never had a problem!! Plates are good for 4 years, no inspections whatsoever!!! Not even any stickers needed on the windshield!!

Minnesota: No emissions test for ANY car, collector plates (>20 year old) never expire, nice house on 5+ acre wooded lot 12 miles from Twin Cities cost about $400K, 4 seasons, etc.

Bummers? Drastic seasonal temperature changes are hard on major roads and bridges. (You may have heard the story on the news...)

Deals are out there...I just bought a condo 1 br 2 car garage - for 210k on the edge of la jolla (not in la jolla). I'm less than 10 minutes from the beach and have a decent view.

Ok I'll grant you 210k buys a heck of a lot more just about anywhere else (excepting a few places in CA and New York), but you can find the deals here

There is a fix for that. Pull the distributor and everything under it and replace with an LS6. Just kidding Brother Are you watching Barry Bonds right now????

Odd the people at both the Poway and Clairemont DMV both agreed that no smog was needed with "Vehicle of Historic Value" plates. The computer begs to differ, but the computer system is older than my car...

I actually thought the same thing for the 50 years I lived there! . Then I crossed the state line by 55 miles and geee, the sky is deep blue, the grass is green, the beaches are sooo much cleaner than any Calif beach (I grew up in Orange County), and best of all.... NO SALES TAX, NO SMOG (in the air or smog checks on any car) and $55. for TWO years of lic at DMV. And I ask, why did it take me 50 years to come to Oregon?

I spent my last 16 years in Northern Cal (Chico). Still have my ranch, but Im only there a few days a month... In the past 5 years, Ive seen Chico go from a real nice town to a over populated mess. The latest real estate boom killed the town I once loved.
