look at the exhaust manifolds. If you had a smog pump then there should be 4 bolts where the smog pipes came out of to connect to the smog pump. Once this unit is unbolted from the exhaust manifold, then some type of pipe thread bolts need to be screwed into the holes.
That could be one indication if a smog pump was used.
Of course the easiest way is the one answer I dont have. Was a smog pump used on a 72 vette or not.
Unless yours is different from the repair manual I'm looking at, you are missing your smog pump. Should be on top between your compressor and alternator. That is of course if they used one in 1972, that I don't know.
I believe that in 1972 only 454 engines and LT-1 engines came off the line with smog pumps installed. Also called A.I.R. pumps or air injector reactor ( I Think). So to answer your question, I don't think your vette ever had one.

2 things to note,, 1 get rid of that under hood maltov cocktail waiting to happen ASAP! repalce it with 3/8" fuel injetion rated fuel hose ASAP,, unless you like roasting marshmellows,, also the charcol canistor and vac advance are swaped,, the upper vac line on the 4175 is a staged vac, specificly for the dist vac advance,, it's in the carb paper work.

I believe that silver tag near the brake booster is the emissions tag and will list what was installed on the engine including if it had an A.I.R. pump.
Call Ken Carter (Carters Corvettes) in Livermore. CA. He fought the great state of Kalifornia (CARB) about smog stuff on Corvettes about 15 years ago. The L48s with Federal emmision did not have smog equipment. But perhaps the few that were originally purchased out here and delivered in Kalifornia back in 1972 were forced to be purchased with that fine technology.
Well the NCRS manual says in 72 all base 200 hp and LT-1s had smog pumps from the factory. Check the emissions tag near the power brake booster and see if it reads AIR. They are not wrong very often so check it out.

Lyle,
Going from memory here, but if I recall correctly the only Corvette that did not receive the A.I.R. equipment in 1972 was the non-California base engine/automatic equipped cars. I'm also pretty sure that the current NCRS TIM&JG states this as well. If this car was delivered outside of California, I'd say that it is OK without the A.I.R. equipment.
Two comments...
The car looks really nice in the photos... Lots of factory equipment in very good shape. A nice factory style air filter assembly would look really good on that car.
As mentioned previously, the fuel filter/rubber hose arrangement is a disaster waiting to happen. Replace it with a factory style hard line from the fuel pump to the carburetor. If you absolutely must have an in line filter, you can adapt a 1968-1969 style line and use the reproduction filter.

That information was from the fourth edtion 2006. Check it out as thats the way I read it and why I said it usaally has the correct information. In later years some automatics had no smog.
