Default Installing New Transmission

What would be a better choice with my Transmission

a Turbo 350 or a Turbo 400

Am running a 400 hp engine .

Depends on what you had before?
Driveshaft lenths are different, cross member has to be moved.
Kickdown cable for a 350 or a electric wire to the gas pedal for the 400.

2004R would be the correct answer. Minor mods needed and you get overdrive

I would think a 700R4 would be the better choice if goiing with an overdrive . As far as a different length driveshaft , I can always have a 3 inch shorter one made .

You will get some argument on that. There are inherent internal lube/cooling issues on the 7004R that don't exist on the 2004R. You will also find in here that there are severl folks that feel the 2004R is a stronger tranny with less mods than the 7004R

My Vette came with a Turbo 350 but I have always heard a 400 was tougher .

I didnt realize the crossmember would have to be moved just to support a Turbo 400 , I thought the mount was in the same area .

What is this electric wire you are refering to ?

Yea, anytime you start changing stuff theres things to consider. With all that said and for all the work, Either the 7004 or 2004 is better than the 350 or 400.

Yea , fabricating has been my life for many years ... so having to move the crossmember ( if I actually have to ) is not going to be a problem .

In all actuality , I'd rather go with a 700R4 so I can take this 3:08 gear out and put in a 3:42 or a 3:73 even .

My question is though ....

Would I be better off installing the 400 instead of a 350 ?

200 is stronger than 700, especially with the right rebuild. I have had several high horse cars with 350 turbos in them, with no troubles. 400 is bulletproof, but also takes more horsepower to spin it all, heavier internals. My opinion would be a nicely built 200, or a built t/h350.

Yea, most of the builders like BTO and the on line vendors really seem to favor the 700 and most of the tranny shops I talked to that had any experience other than just repairs did too. But, in here and the other hot rodders I talked to where the guys drive and race C3's its a LOT of 2004R's. I built mine to basically the same thing as a Stage 2 and have about $700 in it

I blew a hole through the pan of a turbo 400 in a 455 cutlass right in the middle of the street!

Eh I kinda like my th350c. I beat the living hell out of it and it just keeps on taking the torture. Tis still stock, too. Just had the fluid and filter changed like 6 months ago, couldn't ask for a better tranny.

Now if you're actually going to be doing a lot of freeway/highway cruising, an OD is a better bet. 2004R would be my choice. Heard many more good things about that.

Now the question is .... what modifications would I have to do to install the 2004R ? I would need a different brake light switch I'm sure ... to kick out the overdrive when I hit the brakes . Plus , I read where it has a lock up converter so this would require wiring too . I am not running a computer so if this would require me to have one ... its a forget it quickly option !

It looks like I am going with a TCI Turbo 350 streetfighter transmission

The 350 and the 400 both were lockup trannys, so you wouldn't need any new switch. A simple pickoff the brake light circuit to drop it out of Lockup. No computer needed either
