Hi all, I have an 82 vette all stock and the trans converter is acting up. The guy at the local tran shop said its the VSS (vech. speed sen.). Here's my problem, I can't find its location. I even checked that book looking thing (manual) It mentions it with code 24 but no referrence to where it is. If anyone knows please help THANKS.

Pull your instrument cluster, it's attached to the back of the speedometer, it's letter "A" in the picture.

THANKS TO EVERYONE!! you all came through for me. Hopefully I can find out why my tran TCC locks up as soon as it hit 2nd gear I don't think its the lockup switch in the trans because when I tap the brake pedal it disengages instantly. THANKS HUGIE82
It might be the pressure switch in the tranny, the VSS sends a reference to the CCC, the CCC decides when it is happy enough with the engine and speed to lock, but the pressure switch should hold it off until your in 3rd or 4th

But isn't the pressure switch the same switch thats activated when I trigger the brake light switch?
No, the pressure switch inside the tranny controls the ground side of the solenoid. As I understand it, the pressure switch gets made when the tranny is in 3rd or 4th, providing a ground path for the solenoid. At that point the converter can go into lockup provided the CCC says its ok. The CCC bases that decision on engine temp, speed, and probably RPM. That signal goes thru the brake pedal switch and then to the tranny.
Early converter lock-up is a common problem witht 82 Corvettes. I bought an aftermarket computer chip for mine and it made a day and night differance in the drivabulity of the trans. The converter would lock up at 30mph in 3rd gear and damn near stall the engine with the OEM chip in it.

YES, Thats what is happening! I ordered a chip stage one from corvette central (hoping it will get here today). If I still have the disengagement problem I will pull the pan & check the pressure switch. THANKs for all your imputs!!
If this trans still doesn't disengage with the gas pedal being depressed. I'm also looking into the distributor module(7 pin w/ electronic vacuum adv), it also has a switch to the TCC. Will all figure this out sooner or later!!!
If your car still has the original distributor and fuel injection, it will NOT have a vacuum advance cannister on the distributor.
The chip I use in my own 82 and have installed in other 82s , with excellant results, is the "ThermoMaster" by Hypertech. It requires a 160 degree thermostat be installed. You also HAVE to run Premium gas in the car at all times.
