I was checking for a drain on my battery tonight and I dropped a wrench across the terminals. Now I have now power anywhere and I have no idea where to start looking. Any help would be appreciated.
That was some fast help. Thanks. I started looking for the fusible links, but got frustrated. I had taken the negative cable off after I shorted across it then put it back on. I was reaching down to put my volt meter on it and it sounded like an arc. For some reason when I screw the side mounted cable all the way in on the negative side it loses contact. I backed the bolt a turn or two and now have power. I don't know if something is wrong inside the battery or what. Thanks for the help.
You could have damaged the terminal connections inside the battery. You really do need to have the battery checked out for its capability when loaded to see if it is damaged. Since it starts at all, there should be no fusible links damaged. Did it stay shorted for very long?
the shorted circuit was in battery side, not the peripherals side, so why you expect a fuse blow somewhere? actually, ahorting a battery will suck the power off the car, not surging it to the car.

True, but if the short is large and high current,, and drops very quickly, the inductance in the battery could cause a huge, very short voltage spike, as the inductance tries to keep the current going. Could happen, but inductance is intentionaly kept to a minimum in a battery.
No it didn't stay shorted long at all. As soon as it hit it bounced off.
You may have gotten lucky. I did that on a 68 vert w/the hard top on & blew a hole in the battery, acid every where. You should pull out the battery & check it.
dont feel bad. I set a pos 67 bonneville on fire when I was changing the pump to carb fuel line. The metal line touched the battery and poof! not one of my finer moments.
Re- place the terminal its bad the short time the batt was shorted should not have damaged the car at all maybe just the Battor even the cable connector the fact that it workes when you un-screw it tells ya something.I found a big bolt that screwed right into the battery (on my van not my vett I would re-place it on the vet but to try it find the bolt that will thred into your batt cut all the plastic off the battery side of the connector bolt it up see if you have power .
