I run 255's on the rear and 245's on the front.
The spare is 70 series, original 34 years old (because a 60 will not fit in the carrier) and the tires on the car are 60.
What good is a spare?
Burn the rear end up.
Terry
Spare..??
It's sitting in the garage.....removed it (and the jack) to save weight...still have the carrier, though, just for looks. Also carry 2 cans of spray Fix-a-Flat; so far I've never had to use it.
I remember reading somewhere that the spare tire would help in the event of a rear collision. I check my spare once a year and keep it 5lbs. over-inflated. 75 coupe.
That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. It's true, it does take some of the brunt if you get rear ended.
The spare tire/carrier helping in a rear-end collision has been a thing of debate over the years. I'll admit, it makes sense but I've never read/seen anything from GM design...maybe it was an afterthought.
I do keep the original spare in my '82 but would probably use my cell phone.
Advances in technology...you know all Z06's don't have a spare nor are they on run flats. From the factory we get a small can of GM fix-a-flat and an air compressor...I'm calling a tow truck.

I believe it says that in the owners manual for some years. I'll check mine tonight. 1971

I had my carrier painted to match the car. Had the metal retainer powder coated. Keep spare over inflated but it has never been used. Since I'm writting this, I should be installing the spare soon. JML
I would like to find a "donut" mini spare wheel that will fit the necessary offset for the brake calipers AND that has the correct bolt pattern. I bought a brand new GM vehicle donut and dual pattern wheel from the salvage yard for $25, but it does not clear the calipers!!!
Forget the spare....go with the factory tire inflator/flat repair kits that GM included with every 2001 - 2004 Z06. Great little German made 12volt air compressor, hose, gauge and bottle of flat sealant goop that will plug most holes 1/4 inch or smaller. These dudes are several hundred dollars from Chevrolet but you can get them from Bran on Ebay for $69.00 plus $12.00 postage while his supply lasts. Look for Ebay Item #270152144350. If you are really insecure for very little money you can get a plug kit from Auto Zone or Pep Boys. I bought 3 of the tire inflator kits from Bryan and keep one in both of my cars and one for my 4 wheeler.

One of my past firebirds had those inflatable spares. Really small and..... folded. You put it on and put this heavy duty air bottle to it and it inflates. Looks really scarey as the backside of the tire unfolds first as it inflates. Pushes the sidewall like 4" toward you past the rim before the front side unfolds and it moves back toward the rim. I think that would be nearly ideal! Think of the tire, deflated, going from the bead, inward meeting in the center of the rim and then back out and up to the rest of the sidewall and tread. A cross-section would have it shaped like a mushroom with a wide base. It was the only thing besides a donut that would fit behind the wheel well.
