My 78 had been rattle can painted on the hood and T-tops. I am getting ready to paint it correctly now.
You would not believe how difficult it is to get the rattle can paint off. I tried to scuff it off with 80 grit paper - hardly touches it. I can scrape it off with a razor down to the original paint but it is much more difficult to do than the original paint.
If you are planning on painting your car this way, either keep it forever so you can fight with it for the next paintjob or tell the new buyer that a new paintjob will be very very labor intensive and expensive.
Chemical stripper is OK unless it soaks into the glass. When that happens, you can't get paint to stay adhered to the glass. You'll have to clean up the stripper with highly volatile (and health-risk) cleaners, then bake out the stripper before priming and painting. You safest shot is a power sander made for auto paint removal.
