I've got a bone stock 81 and I would like to hear the exhaust make a little bit more noise. It's my wife's car and she does not want me to change anything but it does sound a bit wimpy especially when I'm with my buddy who's got a 75 with headers and chambered exhaust.
My question is, does anyone have an 81 that they have changed the exhaust or does anyone have any suggetions.
Straight pipes, without mufflers, will be deafening. Even with dual collectors to a single cat, followed by dual exhaust. Ask me how I know.... With the stock L48. I originally got some sound with Magnaflow bullits from Summit- they are really just glasspacks. which have somewhat restrictive flow and do not last very long. I suspect the original Flowmaster 40's would give a little grawl to your engine. Think small, an nonrestrictive for the L48. Now that I've rebuilt the engine for more power, and must still comply with smog laws, I installed new 2 1/2''pipes, a 3" Magnaflow cat and Flowmaster Delta 40's. Good luck- check out the Summit catalog.
Removed the whole original exhaust, minus the manifolds (i ran out of money, so headers come later).
Right now I'm running a direct bolt in 2 1/2" chambered true dual system from MidAmerica. It sounds pretty good. At idle is has a pretty good lump to it, at cruising speed you can barely hear it, and when you stomp on it it sounds like open headers. I also noticed a pretty good horsepower gain, but putting it in wasn't very easy. It didn't fit that great.
From what I understand, Corvette Central has a similar kit that has gotten much better reviews. Unless you are very patient and are willing to screw around with pipes under your car trying to get them to fit right for a couple hours, I'd suggest the Corvette Central model.
