Default Sun Visor Replacement

Okay, I hate to ask stupid questions, but I will. I just bought two replacement sun visors for my 78. No telescoping, no mirror. They slide over about an 8 in rod, but they flop all around. Am I supposed to squeeze the metal cylinder inside the visor to make it tight, or am I missing something that should make it fit tight? Any help from anyone who has replaced theirs? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Surely somebody here has purchased replacement visors before. Did they fit on the rods with no extra parts or adjustment of the metal inside the visor? Just tell me "mine fit fine" or "I had to squeeze the metal tube tighter", or whatever your experience was. Thanks,

I have an 81, and I think we have the same visors.

You might be missing the plastic bushing that goes over the very end of the rod. It fits inside the metal sleeve. I can't imagine that you could be missing it though, because I don't think the visor would even stay in the sleeve. MidAmerica has a nice sunvisor re-build kit. You can also purchase the parts seperately if you only need some parts. I got it for mine and it's perfect now.

I'll try and take a picture tonight of the bushing.

Thanks, mine is so loose that it swings back and forth and won't stay on the rod. It's either the wrong size hole, or something is missing. A picture would be great, guitarcrazy02.

I had the same problem with one of my new visors. I put a towel around it and gently clamped down on the tube until it fit without slopping around. On my '77 there's nothing else to hold it on, just a snug fit. I think the bushing guitarcrazy02 is referring to is where the rod of the visor is attached to the car.

I called the place I bought them and they called the manufacturer and called me back. They said they are intentionally shipped loosed and you squeeze them to tightness you desire. I tried it with towel and pliars, but also made a small rip. I then took two thin pieces of rubber, one on each side of the metal tubes (there are two inside, about 3" long ea) and clamped them in a vise a little at a time until I had them the tightness I wanted.
Karol, your's are like mine. That clamp you see is actually a tube about three inches long and there's another one just beyond it on the shaft. You should carefully pull away from the elbow while moving the visor up and down to pull it off the metal rod and clean up the rod. Rust and gunk is what is hold yours from moving. If you don't fix it someone will pull it one day and the cardboard filler inside will break and you'll have to replace it. Nothing else holds it on the rod except the bend in the metal tubes. Look at a picture from Eckler's or Volunteer Vette or another vendor if you need to see what the rod looks like. It's just a straight metal rod with no grooves or clips or anything. Thanks guys for your info.

I have the opposite problem. I bought a new set of sun visors for my 76, but the existing rods are too large in diameter to get the visors on.
