Default vavle problems

driving home last night and started hearing a ticking sound out of the drivers side exhaust. checked it out today and this is what i found

its hard to see, but the valve on top is a little bit rounded where it slid off.

i tried loosening it and putting it back but it wiggled alot then came back of when i bumped the engine.

what do i need to do now?

Check the pushrod guide hole.
what do you mean exactly, it seems to be just like the others, except right now its rubbing the right side of the hole because of the position the rockers in

Are the rocker studs screw-in or press-in? The studs may have backed out, thus loosening the rocker arm. I would adjust that valve and then check the valvetrain geometry. You want the tip of the rocker arm to travel across the center 1/3ish of the top of the valve.

Did you remove the rocker arm and check the pivot? Is the Pushrod bent? You can see on the top of the valve stem that it's been working it's way off.

checked it out a little bit ago and the pushrod was bent.
take a look at the guide hole.

what now?
a new pushrod just goes into the groove and the rocke falls off.

Are you sure the rocker is not split/cracked where the ball sits ?
Chevy rockers are known for the bottoms to split out.

If it was cracked, this would make the rocker tilt to one side.

Thats what I meant.
The holes are guides to keep the pushrod and then the rocker straight.

You might be able to install a guide plate, or

the other alternative is to have the hole welded and hole cut, or

a bushing can be made to thread in and then drilled to fit, or

replace head.

Not to be a bummer but from the looks of all the thick gunk in the heads it would be a good time to rebuild the motor and replace the heads with a better set!! jmo

I'd do the following:

Install new pushrod.
Install guide plate.
Install new rocker.
Clean gunk out of engine.
Drive it like you stole it.

I hope there are a lot of miles on that engine. If not, its been run hard and put away "hot". If lots of age on the engine, the valve springs may be pretty weak....and if you wound it up tight, well, $hi+ happens. As a minumum you ought to de-gunk the engine and have the heads overhauled with new springs, valves, reground seats, etc.

There is more crap on the top of that engine then on my DD with 99,000 miles. Adding performance parts, per your signature, to that filthy hog, is a waste of time. Clean it up and do it correctly!

where do i get a guide plate? and any more info on that.

hopefully in the next few months ill have the money for some new heads but i just need a quick fix right now.
what heads would you guys recommend, nothing real fancy and expensive?

thanks,

Well to be honest if the bottum of the engine looks anything like the top putting new heads on it would probably blow the rings out of the pistons if you dont rebuild the bottum end!!
you should be able to pick up a beefy rebuilt 350 with a descent set of factory 2:02 heads for a couple grand and just throw your intake etc. on it!!

i need to look into that...
but i took he oil pan off a while back and everything seemed clean and there wasnt any gunk in the pan. ive only had the car running for a few months after it has sat for 15 years. thats why there are some new parts, and some crappy ones still left. as for changing the oil, changed it probably 3 or 4 times with mobil 1, since it started running.

OT - Those are most likely not "461" heads. They look like they might be peanut valved, 70cc heads from a 307 engine IMHO. The "461" heads would not have acessory holes and they would have double hump casting symbols. The rest sounds good though.
